Considering i delivered the first 790G in the world you would think i should have some pics which i do ofcourse but are 35mm. This machine came straight from Minexpo 96 to Sydney and we prepped it and then delivered it to Thiess's Mt Owen Mine. There is a pic of it in one of Eric,s books whilst on display at the expo.

Cat never had a 790. It was a 992 conversion by Tiger, therefore it became a Tiger 790. Base nmachine was a Cat 992, then they changed out the front end, and added a different torque converter and other drivetrain upgrades.
Later on, Cat bought the rights to it and re-badged it the 854, keeping the numbering system of the other Cat RTD's
That is the abbreviated version. It is late.

Thank you Claus for the nice pictures off the CATERPILLLAR 854G! Quote:Cat never had a 790. It was a 992 conversion by Tiger, therefore it became a Tiger 790. Thats indeed the complete story. TIGER Enginering from "Down Under" modificated the CATERPILLAR 992 Wheel loader in to a 690B Wheel Dozer etc version. And the latest model they produced before they where taken over by CATERPILLAR was a 992G into a TIGER 790G Wheel Dozer. CATERPILLAR just renamed that model into the well known 854G. But I'm looking for a nice action picture of the TIGER 790GThanks Wouter

I saw the 790 at MinExpo, it was the best looking machine at the show. Tiger certainly showed Cat how good cab design should be done, Tigers cab layout made Cats efforts look very poor. It felt right the moment you sat down, no wonder they bought it. The 590 was based on the 990 loader.

I wonder if the Tiger 790G ever made it iinto production? I have seen pics of the 690B etc. I wonder if Cat bought the Tiger line when the 790G was a prototype and when it was released it was then the Caterpillar 854G like jdofmemi mentioned.

yeah, that sounds logical as i have found bagel pics on the interweb
it was probably CAT's idea to make a bigger version

The complex of Newgrange was originally built between c. 3100 and 2900 BC,[2] meaning that it's aproximately 5,000 years old. According to Carbon-14 dates,[3] it is more than 500 years older than the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, and predates Stonehenge by about 1,000 years.

Gents I sat in a Tiger 790G at Mine Expo in 1996, I have sales brochures for the 590B(990), 690C(992C), 690D(992D) and the 790G(992G), the 790 bumph is marked preliminary as the 992G was brand new from Cat, I do remember that the sales chap said the dozer hydraulics were from a D10 or 11, I can't remember which, I have photes some where too. The machine shown in the pamphlet is identical to the 854G shown above but badged Tiger 790G
regards Kevin
Jerry, In the preliminary specs the 790 used a standard 992G Torque converter with a lock up clutch.

Claus, if you have a read here that pretty much answers your question if it ever made it into production, absolutely but numbers are small before it became the 854G. The Minexpo machine the Bridle boys talk of is the one i delivered in December 96. I know at least another mine in our territory Cadia Hill gold mine had both a 790G and a 590 delivered around 98 and Cat bought Tiger soon there after. This 790G machine had a little accident whereby the H655 shovel tried to improve the access to the engine bay area and subsequently during the repair it got redecalled as an 854G. Moral to the story is if you can build a product out of Cat pieces and prove it up and it is industry accepted good chance Cat will come along with a nice cheque some day, look at Elphinstone, Tiger, DJB. Hmmmm, good couple of Aussie outfits there, where am i from?! Thats it i'm off to the drawing board!!!
