Tip of the Week

in my experience, a drill press works MUCH better for removing rivits. most people think you have to spend hundreds on tools like this, but I'm still using the same $40 drill press I bought 16 years ago from a harbor freight-like discount tool store. an absolutely indispensable tool if you build models...

Also, rather than clamping in a vice to punch the rivet through, I center the rivet over a hole drilled in a board, and punch it all the way through. I like to use finish nails held with a pair of vice grips for the punching process too, much cheaper when they get messed up, and significantly easier to hit squarely with the hammer.

This week's tip is making diorama dirt. I would like to ad that some people like to bake the dirt to kill anything that might be living in the soil but I have found so few bugs in my dirt that it was not really necessary.

I keep all my smaller boxes in bigger boxes with a list on the outside and a date, telling me what model box is inside the larger box. This is a word document with a page per box, makes it super easy to find a box when you are looking for it.

That is a good idea because they to tend to take up a fair amount of space and I don't even have a large collection.

Hanging onto the boxes AND packing material inside the boxes is always a wise idea!! I save all my boxes from any collectible I've gotten and also any high end item like computers, TVs, and anything like that. It is a good idea because if you have to move then you have the proper box and the proper packing material for your stuff to protect it like it was when shipped!!

The repacking for movement is just one reason to hang on to those pesky space hoggers. The other reason is because IF your have a box that is in "Mint" condition it also adds value to your collectible no matter what it is. If you take a run thru ADM's site you'll see that a model in "Good" condition will sell for more with a box in "Mint" or "Excellent" than one that either doesn't have a box or the box is damaged.

Thanks Ethan for presenting this to some who have asked this before!!!

I only keep boxes to models that are valuable, eg- TWH M18000, M16000, and my crane models.

This weeks tip is Part one of four: Weathering. I realize that I am not the best at weathering but this is how I do it and I am still quite proud of my work. The next parts will be uploaded in the coming weeks.
Tip 5/14/12

I prefer the Akro-Mils brand organizers - the two columns of bins on either side of the window. They have a good variety of bin sizes large and small, and have interlocking feet & grooves for stability when stacking. Smile

They have decent pricing in Menards stores currently.
