Hello group, I feel a little awkward posting this but I'm kinda stuck.

Last year I was drooling for the release of the Norscot CAT 795F.

However, as much as I love big mining machines I'm not an expert and didn't realise how "similar" in size and components the 797F and 795F are.

So, I was a tiny bit disappointed when it was released because the two models seem almost like for like and because of this I've struggled to pull the trigger and buy one. I was almost set to buy one this week but just couldn't "bite the bullet".

So, I'm wondering if anybody on the forum who has both the 797F & 795F could post or send me some side by side/comparisson photos to help me decide?. I've searched the internet high and low for such photos but to no avail. Despite the similarities, I'm wondering if a physical difference in size can be seen?.

Many thanks in advance.

Paul

Hi Paul, here are some shots from DHS a while back - http://forums.dhsdiecast.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=134916
If it was a bit too similar, you could always add some company logos to set it apart, or some big white ID numbers

Hi Jamie, thanks. Yes, that's why I felt a little awkward with this most recent thread!. I knew about that previous thread which I actually started but I was looking for some new/closer comparisson photos.

It's funny though because even with the photos that Jeff(ac170) posted in that thread it took me a few seconds to figure out which one was which!.

Thanks again though, and hopefully someone will be able to help.

Oh yes so you did, oops! Only got the 797F so can't really comment. If the price is good, I say go for it. You can't have too many big mining machines!

Sure size wise they are similar but there are enough differences when you look hard, I guess if looking hard does not convince you then just buy 1 model, pretty simple really IMO.

Its not too easy to make out differences from the pics featured in the original thread, dump body rib thicknesses etc..

I think Paul already has a 797f and is just concerned about spending a large lump of money on another 795 labelled 797f albeit with a few minor tweeks,

Surely someone has both and can post side by side pics,I too would appreciate this

Why is "phonetically" spelt with a "ph"?

The complex of Newgrange was originally built between c. 3100 and 2900 BC,[2] meaning that it's aproximately 5,000 years old. According to Carbon-14 dates,[3] it is more than 500 years older than the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, and predates Stonehenge by about 1,000 years.

Yes, thanks Graham, you hit the nail on the head there.

Along with the technical differences(ac drive etc) and slightly different dump body I was hoping there would be a more of a size difference between the two.

If you look at the specifications of these trucks; the 795F AC is actually taller and longer than the 797F, but only by inches. I don't patronize Norscrap so I can't offer any comparison photos. Here are some basic dimensions from the Caterpillar website.

Overall length; 795: 49' 9" / 797: 49' 6"
Loading height; 795: 23' 2" / 797: 23'
Wheelbase; 795: 22' 1" / 797: 23' 7"
Tire width; 795: 29' 6" / 797: 31' 3"

Thanks very much for the info Jack, that's really interesting.

So little difference between them in terms of size but the 795F is 600hp and 55t payload less.

I emailed Paul some more pictures but I might as well share them here too.

The 797F is on the left.

797B, 797F, and 795F left to right. The bed definitely doesn't go down far enough on my model at least. I think it can be fixed but I haven't had time to mess with it.

I guess what it comes down to is this- the real trucks are similarly sized and so are the models. The 795F is made up of different castings for sure. The bed is a little narrower and a little shorter. The grill on the 797F is larger. There's a little more detailing on the 795F in my opinion. The wheels/tires on the 795F are better than on the 797F (especially the rear) but not as good as the 797B. There is quite a bit of plastic on the 795F such as the electric gear on top, fuel tank, front ladder and stairs including the rails on them, hydraulic tank, rear axle, engine, wheels, lift cylinders, lower electrical components-- a good bit more than whats on the 797F. Would I buy it again- yes but I like the big mining equipment. Is it worth the price? Up to you.....

Jeff, thank you so, so much. This is exactly what I was looking for and it's very interesting to see the subtle differences.

After seeeing the photos I'm swaying towards getting one but my one concern is the fact that the dump body of the 795F doesn't come down far enough. It's quite noticeable at the front and I wonder if this is just with your one or if it's how Norscot have made the model?.

Thanks again and I really appreciate your time and help.
