So my question is.....how often is a Cat 390D LME used for this? Obviously I know if there is a lot of material to be moved. Maybe I answered my own question....LOL

In most of my experiences any large excavator is only used if there is not much of another choice. In most cases scrapers/dozers are used as primary dirt movers then if it gets rocky or harder to scrape then they will bring in the excavators. I know of at least 1 job where they brought in the big guns at the start and then it was a Cat 5230.

Deadlines and amount and type of material. When the company I work for got their 385, I believe it's first job was a road job. A machine that size though, anything less than a million yards, some serious rock, or a super short deadline will break the bank in MOB costs.

They usually only bring In something that big when they have a lot of dirt to move or run into rock. I've seen Pc 1250's and bigger on road jobs before, even seen 3 D11T's working on about a half mile long area. they were pushing to 2 Pc 1250's and they were loading 777's.
