I've been scratching my head trying to figure out an efficient way to make these style pilot control boots in 1:50:

I was thinking I could just stack different sized rings cut from plastic tubing, but I don't think that'll look very good. Any pointers would help. Thanks!

Dex,

It won't reduce in size as it progresses up toward the handle, however, the corrugated section of a "bendy" straw should look pretty realistic.

Just a thought off the top of my head, as I have no idea if it would work. On a lathe make the segmented desired shape. Use wire shrink wrap or plasti-dip to give the sleeve effect.

Three small round sections of polystyrene (different sizes of course) glued on top of each other and a piece of brass round for the lever down the middle, few layers of black paint for the top of the lever...voila!!

this is the idea I keep coming back around to. With a little bit of Tamiya putty I think I can fill in the remaining details. I'll built one really good one and try to cast a few for future projects. I've had a few beers, and I don't like fiddling with sharp razor things once that's begun, so I'll get to work on it tomorrow when I get home. I'll post what I manage to come up with in a few days here.

As for the lathe comment.... I really, really need to get one of those. I think it'll be my holiday gift to myself at the end of the year.

I would use a piece of resin (conic shape prefferably), then "solder" a brass rod across (method explained at bottom page of the post in this link):

plastic&brass

For that I would suggest .050" brass rod.

Before cutting the rod to size, keep the overlength as a hang for manipulating.

Then I would dremel the base into that shape. If it can hold in a drill, or your Dremel, make sure it is straigth and use a small file to shape it while rotating. That will make a better job than just shaping around the rod.

Then cut the rod and dip the other end in glue for making the head.

First off if it's 1/50, you're limited with pre sized materials.
I was thinking, though I don't think it'd be that great, is using little beading or necklace beads and see if you can find several of the different sizes you need.
To me the easiest approach would be to drill the appropriate sized hole that matches the diameter of your brass rod or other material (for the lever) into a small section of an appropriate sized diameter of styrene rod. Then file the shape of the boot in with a small triangular or square file.......I envision whipping em out in minutes that way.
Of course then just apply the proper paint to the proper parts and done.

I can see the suggestions made so far are ok, but a far more simple sollution is just to file some grooves into a styrene tube. A couple of minutes to make this, and once painted up, should look ok. Some PVA glue onto the handle for the grip, or wrap some tape around it.

Might make a couple for my D9G. It's these little details that can raise the 'quality bar' on customs

How about 3 very small o rings stacked on top of each other. You can get them from a good parts house.

So this is what I have so far:

I cut a small ring from a 2mm brass tube...

And added a small dab of Tamiya White Putty, and placed a 5mm length of wire in it (you really do forget how small 1:50 scale is)...

Tomorrow I'll add more putty once this has cured and start sculpting the rest of the boot, then I'll make the grips for the levers. No need to try and cast these, they are way too small.

An excellent idea. I have always wanted to make some better control levers.

I ended up scrapping my first rendition, the putty was too hard to work with at that scale. So I ended up just stacking different sizes of rods, then drilling a hole and sliding a .5mm rod in and topping it off with a grip.

Here it is mocked up:

You motivate me to put more thought into the cabs I make. Some of my models only have a seat.Whistle
