The field follow 637K has arrived from Wyoming, got a paint job and is working in a residential development south of my house. About 3 million yards so hopefully it will be there a while. The 631K field follow is further south, Im hoping that they will get them working together for some photos. 081-DSC_0081 by Graham May, on Flickr 080-DSC_0080 by Graham May, on Flickr 075-DSC_0075 by Graham May, on Flickr 073-DSC_0073 by Graham May, on Flickr 063-DSC_0063 by Graham May, on Flickr 055-DSC_0055 by Graham May, on Flickr 218-DSC_0218 by Graham May, on Flickr 108-DSC_0108 by Graham May, on Flickr

Anyone have any info on when the 657G will become a "K"? Why has the 637G taken so long to be updated in comparison to all other machines such as excavators and loaders for example?

My thoughts are the market is far more competitive in loader & excavators with better productivity and improved bells and whistles selling machines, more potential sales in a tighter market drives improvements/model updates Look at the large dozer market, CAT pretty much has it sewn up the D11T has been around for a long while (which wasn't much different to an R series) Small market with no players to take on the 657G can't see the need for CAT to develop a new version (I'm surprised to see the 637K)

The "field follow" definition is basically correct. After designing and testing machines at their proving grounds with their employees operating, Cat builds a number of machines of each product which are then given to selected customers to operate along side of their machines of the same family. This process is monitored by Cat engineering. Upon completion based upon the outcome and customer acceptance, the machine is released for production.
Over the last few years, Cat has had to redesign every machine in their product line to meet emissions standards and then house the required filters and tanks. Yes it appears that they concentrated on high volume machines and families first - bulldozers, excavators, rubber tired loaders and articulated dump trucks. Likewise the smaller graders; 120, 12 and 140: have been done. I've yet to find an updated 14, 16 or 24. There is a new 18. Only one of the track loaders has been updated, 963. Two remain at the lower EPA tier. The 620 family of pans was done. Now you are seeing the action on the 630 family. The 657 is now largely a mining machine and mining is very slow.

Nice pics Garham. After 621 and 627 projects we had some talks with Cat about doing the 637. Wish that scraper group will go ahead with this in a near future
