Caterpillar soil compactor from Joal origin, improved by MiniCams, at Jean-Paul's request:   Early 60s in UK, 2 missile carriers of the British Army in development:   At front: Bedford RLB-CALM 4x4/2 carrier with Marshall dropside body and Atlas knuckleboom crane (Promod model) towing a 1+1-axle missile handling trolley (Corgi Toys model being modified) loaded with an English Electric Thunderbird 1 ground-to-air missile (Model Supplies kit), At rear: Bedford RLB 4x4/2 carrier with Marshall sheeted dropside body (Promod model) and 1-axle + 1-line handling and placement missile trailer of unknown brand (Corgi Toys model being modified) carrying a ground-to-air Bristol Aeroplane Co Bloodhound Mk1 missile, equipped with its 2 Thor stato-reactors and its 4 Gosdlin solid fuel booster rockets (Model Supplies kit). In order to - temporarily - close the "modification of vintage models" topic, 2 vehicles in a 1/48 scale, representative of the 70s Corgi Toys production, a Bedford TK 750 KC fire engine fitted with a Simon Snorkel SS 85 access basket equipped with a fire Monitor nozzle and the Commer-Alexander TS3 of the Ecurie Ecosse racing team support vehicle:   Vectis Auctions pictures. The mods in progress on the fire engine are mainly focused on the chassis (cut to get a dual-tyred rear axle fitted) and on the arm "toyish" rack and pinions lifting device (replaced by homemade hydraulic rams):   Based on pictures of the real unit, the racing car carrier got also its chassis cut to have a dual-tyred rear axle fitted; it received Tekno wheels all round and had its workshop access door modified. It still needs a correct replica of the rear tailgate and access ramps. As the truck was carrying 3 D Type Jags at that time, I added 3 Dinky Toys models of that car (even if they are in a 1/45 scale!). They will all get wheels and windscreens modified:   Regards. Guy

I remember 'having' to have that Bedford fire truck.I got it from a second hand shop,after seeing it displayed,in the window.No box.One of the things I really did not like,was those cab lights,grrrrr,red?same as the whole vehicle?  Come on Corgi,everyone(including Corgi)knows they could have done much better.Still,a very nice,functioning model,though.

I agree with you: these molded flashing lights are awful and I plan to replace them by clear plastic ones which can be found in all spares/model items shops these days.
By the way, considering the age of the Bedford truck, should they be blue or orange? What about fire engines at that time? I know we changed in France from orange to blue at some point in time but don't remember exactly when and don't know anything at all about the UK approach on these matters.

Definitely blue.For the U.K.,everybodybody knows,blue=emergency vehicle.GET OUT THE WAY!LOL! It always has been blue,I hope it always will be.They just seem the 'right' colour.

Steve, The semi-trailer was produced in kit form by MVI in 1/50 scale late 80s ( MVI was a small French company specialized in fire engines in a 1/43 scale). It is the Nicolas STA 45 2-line tank transporter, which originally moved the AMX30 main battle tank for the French Army behind the Berliet TRH 350 TS 6x4 tractor (and later with its Renault successor):  Regards. Guy that wrecker looks like a very nice model, and also very heavy duty looking. The load in the Saviem tipper looks great. Is the Conrad dump trailer from Jean-Paul being customized or is that a certain look he is trying to achieve?

Several European countries have tested, from early 2000, 25.25 metres long and 60 tonnes GCW road combinations, simply called LHVs for Longer and Heavier Vehicles. A Dutch example which can be split in 2 semi-trailers of approx. 10 metres, allowing for downtown deliveries. - The LHV architecture as it uses dedicated roads:   - The split unit for deliveries in a town center:   To be continued.
