The Mack competitor with its famous C.O.E. architecture cab, which will inspire generations of fire engine designers, including American LaFrance' or Seagrave's, either in conventionally-closed or torpedo arrangement:

During the eighties, the TOPAS Project ("Tankfahrzeug mit optimalen passiven und aktiven Sicherheitseinrichtungen" , which could be translated by "Tanker with optimal passive and active safety systems") is launched in West-Germany.
The project includes Mercedes-Benz (trucks manufacturer), Haller Fahrzeugbau (German tankers manufacturer) and the German road carrier Raab-Kärcher, in charge of testing these combinations, incorporating many technical innovations at that time (*).
An example of the 2nd generation of units tested by the road haulage company, reproduced in a 1/50 scale by Lion Toys:

Mercedes-Benz 1838 LS 4x2/2 tractor and 3-axle Haller TOPAS 39 hydrocarbons tank semi-trailer (modified Lion Toys models),

Note (*): the numerous technical innovations (self-supporting tank with no chassis, rear-view camera, ABS brake system on all axles, low-drag skirting on truck and semi...) resulted in a too expensive combination to attract haulage companies. The project was then dropped around mid-90s.
Interestingly enough, most of what was considered as innovations at that time, has now been incorporated into heavy vehicles design.

Seagrave is a major american fire-engines manufacturer, still in existence today.
In the 50s, his "70th Anniversary Series" bonneted cab-type vehicles were a success and were manufactured in his Columbus (Ohio) plant. Produced during almost 20 years with little changes, various types of vehicles could be then found in most Ohio fire brigades and were successful outside the State borders as well.
Two vehicles of the Columbus Fire Department fleet, nicely reproduced in a 1/50 scale by Corgi:

- left: Seagrave 400-B 4x2/2 pumper,
- right: Seagrave 900-T 4x2/2 tractor with Seagrave TDA 85' 1-axle 85ft aerial ladder semi-trailer.

If Corgi only upgraded a 1960s Corgi Toys mold for their American LaFrance aerial ladder model (top picture: Corgi Toys model at left, "revisited" Corgi model at right), the Corgi TDA 85' Seagrave is a very specific model, a true replica of the real unit (bottom picture):
