So where are you going to get one? Other than an incredible scratch built model from Randy Krieg, I have never seen a model of a 5230. Are you planning on building one? Would be a great project, I'd strongly encourage you to go for it and keep us posted.

Brian,

Greg (325cl) and I were thinking of doing one ..... and thought there may have been a model out there big enough to use for parts.....there isn't. I don't know we'll have to talk about it and see if we think we can pull it off.

(All from rough memory) but these were horrible machines to operate in real life, unlike the 5130 that mass produced for companies and sold quite well overall, I believe that the 5230 machine was one of the main reasons CAT sold all their Shovel technology as part of the electric drive truck swap with Terex back in '03.

D5G, Greg and yourself would make a fine 5230, something I have planned myself in the future, I really hope you guys get it built and I'm sure many others do too.

I'm pretty sure these were only offered as shovels, not regular excavators. Photos courtesy Redjack Ryan and Randy K.….. (again from memory)

And Randy's 5230 self built machine in 1/50 for wow factor and scale reference.

Rowan.

Don't forget about the 1/16th scale model in wood that woodchuck built. A true masterpiece.

From what I remember about the 5230's, they were no worse than any other hydraulic for warts and hiccups - they all have them, and the bigger they are, the worse they are.

R.Krieg and yes definitely Woodchuck built one heck of a nice scratch made 5230 each of them......so surely it can be done.

Several of those photos are from a mine here in Indiana, taken by Redjack Ryan just FYI.Smile

Just to clarify, Cat never sold their shovel technology at all. The deal fell through with Terex and was abandoned before it was ever in place.

Cool Hey that's a nice lookin model. Ahhhh the good ol days, back when I had time to work on models. Now it's just work work work......... Maybe I can go back to this when I retire. I hope you guys build one. It was a fun project Smile Smile Yes: there was a shovel & HEX version.

The 5230 was like being married to a beautiful women; she was awesome to look at, every once in a while she would give you some and then it was REALLY awesome, but when PMS set in you had better get out of the house, cause all hell was going to break loose. Know what I mean? Think

Mike

That was a three year project. I did most of it in the fall and winter since our spring and summer work schedule is pretty busy. I had also hoped to do a HEX version, but just never got time.
