Here is the first picture showing the crawlers attached to the Spade Model. Because of my crude tools, I was unable to make the tracks more realistic. But I think when the model is all done and sanded and painted and detailed, it will look pretty nice. I am always the first to admit my models are far from perfect. One more week the Spade contruction should be done and I can begin the sanding process. The 1/24th scale Big Muskie will be my next big model project to build starting early summer of this year. Anyone wanting to see other pics of my Bucyrus-Erie models being built can visit my webpage and got to photos and click on the Bucyrus-Erie section. www.doncampbellmodels.com Thanks again for all the kind words.

Thanks again for the positive input about the Spade model. I have four collectors interested in the Spade and they all prefer the colors it was when it was scrapped. The first person on the list is Steve Wolken from Cleveland and owner of the Big Iron Museum. Steve has first refusal for the model, so it could end up in Cleveland , next it would end up in Denver in Kevins, Rocky Mountain High Museum , and next it could end up in Va. near Va. Beach and last it could end up in Ohio in a second location. But it very well end up in Gaylord as I doubt anyone will justify the price I will have to put on it after I figure the hours and materials involved. It doesn't look like much, but it really has been quite a project .

Don-as I have watched this post I have begun to have a problem with you and your attitude. First your skill level and the enormity of the project make any of us other customizers look punny and pathetic! Ohh look at me I just painted a 40 ton crane and here you are with a hand fabricated model as big as life-HA! Now to the crude tool remark, I see no flint or bonze age tools and to be able to make a single part on this would require way better tools and knowledge on using them than a lot of us have. So in summary get this one finished as I cannot wait to see what a 1:24 Big Muskie would look like! (okay I was just kidding!!) Your are a master craftsman. You also think way outside the box!! Man what a model or rather I say a work of art!! I cannot believe you are tackling Big Muskie next!! Bob

AWESOME DON!!!! When I was a kid I saw the Gem of Eqypt (the sister shovel to the Silver Spade) working 24/7 in Ohio. The image of incredible size, power and presence of that machine almost 35 years ago is still vivid in my mind. Its the main reason I still find myself drawn to construction, demolition and mining projects allover the world!! Great job!!!! Stephen SetteDucati, Manager of Marketing and MediaMCM Management Corp.

Hi you guys, Only you guys can relate to how much I love looking at machinery. It is a good feeling getting nice compliments from all of you knowing you really do know what these machines are supposed to look like as models. I probably am the hardest critic of all as I expect to build these models and have the very first one look perfect . You would be surprised how little info I had to build most of my models. As far as crude tools go, I would love to have a metal shear, a mig and tig welder, a milling machine , a lathe and most of all a small laser cutter hooked up to a computer and most of all a powder coating setup and oven. And most of all , a worshop five times this size, ha,ha. But i am grateful for what I have and thankful for the talent I have been given from God . Sharing my projects with so many nice people is the best feeling . I absolutly love going to the coal mines and operating monster machines and love operating small machines . I also enjoy just walking to heavy equipment salvage yards . So I do have a lot in common with many of you. Sad news to report- It's now looking like the Big Muskie will be 1/50th scale and so will the Krupp continuous wheeled excavator model. Unless I get a new, bigger shop before summer, LOL Thanks again everyone for your kind comments.

Hi Joe, The Captain would be a awesome project too to build. There are several other monster shovels and draglines I would love to see come together on my workbench . My excitement is the challenge of making the pictures on my workbench turn into three demensional all steel models. That is so fun for me to see them slowly come to life.

Hi Steve, I see you are from Mass. I was stationed at Fort Devens, Mass . and got to operate loaders and a couple dozers for three months before I was discharged. It was the best three months of my heavy equipment operator carreer. (:>) In fact, it was the only time I ever had a real job running heavy equipment , ha,ha.

Don, you have an amazing amount of talent. It's always awesome to see each of your models as you work on them and also when they're completed! What do you figure the Spade will weigh when it's complete?
Good luck on doing Big Muskie. I think you need a bigger shop though ;)

Hi Alex, I'm guessing the Spade will weigh in between 400 and 450 llbs. So I should not have too much problem with the weighmasters hauling it south, ha,ha.
