The "Automobiles Berliet" company participated to various expeditions in desert conditions in order to demonstrate the reliability of their equipment. The Berliet GVL 28 2-axle truck which was part of the crossing of the Sahara in 1932 during the Algiers-Gao-Algiers raid, set to organize goods road transport to the South, through the Algerian desert:     To be continued.  Many years later, the Lyon trucks manufacturer participate to similar adventures, one of them being the Abidjan-Marseille raid in 1973, through the Sahara desert. One of the Berliet L64 4x4 trucks involved in the expedition:   Regards. Guy

It should be added that 1:1 models of both trucks(*) have been restored and can be seen in Berliet Foundation premises, near Lyon (France):   Note (*): the GVL 28 restored by the Berliet Foundation is in fact a very similar GDHL model, while the L64 unit bears slightly different colors. Note (*): the GVL 28 restored by the Berliet Foundation is in fact a very similar GDHL model, while the L64 unit bears slightly different colors [...] I just realized that the picture of the GVL 28 posted above was one of the model produced by Hachette. In 1941 as petroleum products are difficult to get in occupied France, the transport company Mory organized a trip from Algiers to Cotonou and return, to demonstrate that Berliet trucks could run on peanuts and palm tree oils, available in the then French colonies. Berliet produced GBU/TBU 6x6 trucks for the French Army and some overseas armies as well (including China). Some "civilized" wreckers - called TCH-CLD (for "Camion Lourd de Depannage", which could be translated by Heavy Recovery Truck) - went to some French Fire Brigades. The Strasbourg FB version modeled by Hachette;     Below, a French Army GBU-CLD towing a TBU tractor with a Coder equipment trailer carrying a Berliet Aurochs 6x6 amphibian vehicle (Berliet had some license agreements with Alvis-Stalwart to built their famous amphibian vehicle):  Missing on the picture is the general cargo GBU truck, fitted with a sheeted dropside body. Guy the tow truck is different, I’ve never seen one where the controls have a seat.

Steve, Berliet had license agreements with the American company Austin-Western to build in France their recovery cranes. They used the one installed on the 2.5Tons M60 US Army truck for their light wrecker (left), which was named the GBC 8KT CMD ("Camion Moyen de Depannage", which could be translated by Middle-Class Recovery Truck), while the heavier model - the GBU 15 CLD (right, see previous post for definitions) - had the one installed by the US Army on their 5Tons M62 wrecker:  Both recovery cranes were fitted with a seat with hand controls for the crane operator, as shown on the M60 (left) and M62 (right) vehicles below:  I hope this helps. Guy you are “ The Man”, Post Pictures Master General thanks for keeping them coming. Your pictures give me time off from my dog’s, I think they want me out of my house. Are the fruit crates in the OM 20C customs or do they come with the model.
Again thanks so much for the pictures of vehicle models would never see without your posts, they are very interesting.
