Those snorkels are interesting - in WWII the Germans used them on submarines as this allowed them to run their diesels while the U-boats were submerged, giving them a whole lot more speed (and range) than they could achieve with their electric/battery power. Apparently, things could be unpleasant when big waves washed over the snorkel in heavy seas as the engines would then suck in the air inside the vessel.

There was more than one version as i remember seeing a photo with a platform part way up the snorkel with the operators on it. Chet your right shinsei did make a model in 1/60  Mick
