and if that guy has problems with the Liebherr quality, let him switch to a Sany or XCMG machine. i am sure he´ll be VERY happy there...

This is a load of poop. Liebherr makes a damn good machine. I love our Austrian built cranes and drills. I can't vouch much for the truck cranes or the heavy lift cranes, as the majority of the ones I am around are the HS series cranes. Between our sister companies and us and we own the largest fleet of them. I used to run the first HS series machine in the US. They are expensive but you get what you pay for. We do crazy stuff with the cranes, things that a crane is not supposed to do and they work and hold up well. We also check out other crane manufacturers goods and regularly compare the Liebherrs to other makes. Our in house built cranes and PLM's can beat out a Liebherr in some applications but not as an all around crane.

As Christian has mentioned some have had an issue with catching on fire. We have lost 2 over the years (one in Spain and the other somewhere in Africa). I know Hayward Baker lost one out in Las Vegas a year or two ago and a scrap company lost one on Staten Island about a year ago. 3 of these were due to a leaking injection pump on the Mercedes-Benz engine and the other was a hydraulic hose blew and sprayed all over the engine. I believe this problem has been fixed as they now use an in house built Liebherr engine and some nice guarding so if a hose breaks the odds of a fire are very remote.

This has been an excellent post for a couple reasons... Seems like one of the most asked questions on this board is about what is good or about this and that junk machine.. of any make.. So many things effect the preformance of any particular unit of any type in the field, not just cranes, but anything. Any person you can stand up and howl about what a piece of junk Liebherr cranes are, just does not have any real knowledge of the mfg, product, or history. Anyone who has either operated or been around a well maintained Liebherr crane will almost always say they are an excellent piece of machinery. Like Christian said, all the three major players build fine, high quality machines. In the realy big crane sector, something less is not well tolerated in any fashion. Too much at stake for poorly built machines.. Like I have said, they all can have issues, but in general most machines built today by a major mfg, will do the job and do it well. The best equipment experts will match the machine to the duty/service it is expected to preform.When poor choices are made it makes the machine look bad, but in reality, many times its the person that specs out that machine and did the research on it... and more important, is the person pulling the levers and taking care of the machine and last but not least is the person who hired them to do it. Its just to complicated a subject to be able to say... "Those are Junk, etc". Just not realy accurate to do that.

Every product will have problems, The 4100 for example. It's a great model i'm sure but i've heard a lot of bad things about it. Things will have problems...

The one thing I've read the most from the guys that have replied is "it's partly operator" which is true. This guy probably couldn't figure out the controls of a Liebherr crane and got pissy. I've never had any trouble operating one ever.

The only problem was one of the LTM-1160/2 GIANT V8 Liebherr Diesel overheated and blew out, well the removed the engine and sent it off to Canada. They said it'd be 6 months before the engine came back, but 4weeks later it came back. They did everything to that engine, new pistons, crankshafts, turbos everything. That crane NEVER ran better, it had more speed and power after that it was great!

Christian mentioned a story about Manitowoc shipping a part? Well let me tell you this, Our 2250 broke down and need 4 parts, 3 for the engine and the two block sensor. Well that took 2 1/2 months to get the parts which weren't really anything "major" really. We actually lost the job to a competitor because we had to take the crane out. Contractor brought in another crane company and another 2250, got the job done.

Talking to the mechanics they haven't 1 bad thing to say about Liebherr not a single thing. What that guys problem was I'll never know... As for the price?? Bigge bought 4 LTM-1200 ... I heard a rumor of how much it cost whether it's true or not?? I don't know

oatta see us put away a 24,(stella)

weve had liebherr in our fleet for a while. they dont (at least i dont think ) buy more because of how deep an operator has to know the techno stuff.
i have seen it everywhere,nobody wants to take a moment and go over the crane and its componets(it cost money) so they settle for grove, link belt, where the overide key gets you alot more mileage than the Liebherr key when the op hasent been introduced to the machine and cant make it go

Real or model.
I have never operated a crane or spoken to a crane driver, but the majoroty of large cranes in the UK are Liebherr so they must be good, otherwise they would't be bought.
What engines are in Liebherr cranes, are they liebherr or Mercedes benz.

depends on the model. some switched from one to the other, for example the old LTM1400

ive had an injector line break on an 80t krupp just left the steel mill and security chased me down to let me know i couldnt see the flames from the cab.... it was running a little rough but didnt think nething of it.... we got the fire out with minimal damage that was a mercedes engine aswell but i blame age and wear for it spliting.

mercedes makes a good engine or did.... i know a few new Tadano's have had problems with them only because there made in korea now (at least the ones in these cranes) bad cylender heads

The reason I asked is, Mercedes had a problem with a batch of their V8. One of their engines seized on one of their demonstration machines with only 127hrs on the clock. The machine had to be winched on a lowloader on dropped off at the dealer and a machanic from Germany came to look at the problem. The reason I know this is that it was our truck they used.

We have a few of our Freightliner day cab trucks running mercedes in them. The mechanics do not like them. They have not give us anyproblems

Mercedes-Benz builds a very good engine. They are or were the largest diesel engine manufacture in the world (a few years ago I read that they were the largest). The problem I have seen was on the V8's. A fuel leak would develop and due to it's location the fuel would pool up in the lifter valley (or whatever you call that area on top of an V engine between the cylinder banks). The lifter valley would fill up until fuel would slowly spill over the edge. Just a little at a time, as the fuel leak was very small. Well that pool would be in the neighborhood of a few gallons of diesel, sitting there, just waiting for the correct conditions to burn.

Here is a case point. When I worked for Hayward Baker we had a Liebherr 883. The first project I ran it on I noticed all the fuel sitting on top of the engine. I pointed it out to my superintendent and the mechanic. They did not care and said it had been leaking for years and was no big deal. I figured ok all I have invested in this is my lunch box and if this thing starts to burn up I can run very fast and I will get some good live action photos Teeth Well about 7 years later the damn thing finally caught on fire and burned on a job in Las Vegas.

A drill I ran for awhile for the same company, it had a leaking injection line. The fuel would drip right onto the exhaust manifold and sizzle. No one cared. I was at the opposite end of the drill with my trusty fire extinguisher patently waiting. Lasted the entire job and nothing ever happened
