Great looking machines the Tigers and interesting reading about the history of the 790G. I've always loved their 690C, an impressive workhorse.

Considering i delivered the first 790G in the world you would think i should have some pics which i do ofcourse but are 35mm. This machine came straight from Minexpo 96 to Sydney and we prepped it and then delivered it to Thiess's Mt Owen Mine. There is a pic of it in one of Eric,s books whilst on display at the expo.

Claus, if you have a read here that pretty much answers your question if it ever made it into production, absolutely but numbers are small before it became the 854G. The Minexpo machine the Bridle boys talk of is the one i delivered in December 96. I know at least another mine in our territory Cadia Hill gold mine had both a 790G and a 590 delivered around 98 and Cat bought Tiger soon there after. This 790G machine had a little accident whereby the H655 shovel tried to improve the access to the engine bay area and subsequently during the repair it got redecalled as an 854G.

Moral to the story is if you can build a product out of Cat pieces and prove it up and it is industry accepted good chance Cat will come along with a nice cheque some day, look at Elphinstone, Tiger, DJB. Hmmmm, good couple of Aussie outfits there, where am i from?! Thats it i'm off to the drawing board!!!

O.K., but reading your original statement did not prove to me that the 790G ever went into full production as you could have been delivering the prototype. Would not have been the first time someone ended up with a prototype or one of a kind machine.

Hey Gav,

WD-01 which was re-branded at the first midlife still to this day has the Tiger 790 Decals visable under the CAT 854G branding on thr RHR. The Shovel Kiss to the LHR required all the House Doors to be replaced EXCEPT the RHS of which there was none on the planet so we panel beated it on on it went for another 5 years!

This machine caused a little heart ache as it was fitted with a few parts and Wiring that were not in the Cat book so we had to keep reverting to the Tiger Literature to get some info!

From memory the Lift Cylinder and Control Valve were from a D10???????

This machine did it's 46000 Hour contracted life and was parked up on the Blue Dump to rust away (ocassionally getting called to duty for projects). Kepping the Old 994 company. They brought a NEW 854G which is the most reliable single machine fleet on site!

So basically the 790 is a 992? Never seen a proper 992 RT but custom conversion's into a Rubber tyre.

The RTD that Ross posted uses a D9H or D8K blade, D10N tilt cylinders and dual tilt valve, 992B lift cylinder, and the torque has a centrifugal valve without the spring to keep in max torque. Little more miss match than a Tiger.....

Yeh, the 690C & D were 992C & D based and with the larger 992G they bumped it up to 790G.

The first model used a single 992B lift ram for the blade and after that it went to twin rams.
