Kerst ,

Yes it belonged to Laramie.. They ended up buying a regular carbody and tracks for it. I believe they sold the trailer.

Great, here is one of the few pictures I have seen of this crane:

It is a scan from a picture from an old Transportation Engineer magazine

kerst, Wow sweet pic. I have been looking for a pic showing the outriggers and the outrigger counterweights.

No I have never worked for Laramie, although I have ran many of thier cranes.

From what I was told, the outrigger counter weights were an after thought. The 4100M was a failure as it to long to set up. I believe it was a 250 ton crane.

Here are the three pics I have of it.

Here is a picture of the 4100M from an old Goldhofer brochure:

Very similar to some of the pictures posted earlier.
Amazing crane though!
And a great post!

Born to Lift. I tried asking you a question but I don't see it here so I'll ask again. I have a 4100 ringer that I am working on. But when I took it out of the box and began working on it I found that the contiunuous loop in the gantry assembly that comes pre rigged was all off the sheaves and tangled up. This line does not go to any winch drum. Can you tell me or show me how that is supposed to be rigged. Its the assembly that flips up from the gantry on the ringer model. With it all tangled and off the sheaves its hard to figure out how its supposed to be since I never saw it rigged properly. I don't know if you can do a diagram on here or just try to write out how it should be rigged. By the way great work on the weathering job. My brother and I have been talking about weathering some our stuff because it makes it more realistic. By the way the rigging I am asking about is not what goes up over the mast top and on to the equalizer thats hooked to the pennant line going up to the boom tip. Its the loop in the gantry with that little flip up assembly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Kachemaw,

Look at the pics of my ringer and you will see how the cable for the self erecting equalizer is supposed to be. I ran a 4100 ringer and that is how it was on that one.

Here is a link that shows how to reeve it. Scroll down to page 18. Just follow the diagram and coil up the extra leaving it on top of the rig. I used very fine copper wire to tie the coil in 4 places.

http://www.essexcrane.com/pdf/Manitowoc4100WRinger/charts/Folio743.pdf

Here is the link to the boom hoist diagram. The TWH ringer comes with the boom hoist reeved with 12 parts of line. There is only supposed to be 8 parts. There is also a chart that tells you how many penants to use pre boom length.

http://www.essexcrane.com/pdf/Manitowoc4100WRinger/charts/50999.pdf

This is the best way to reeve it. Have all the boom you want in it attached laying on the floor or a table plus the mast in the upright position. After you figure out how many penants you need attach them to the point of the main boom. Next, lay the penants on top of the boom and see where they end up.
They should end up near the back stay lugs for the jib on the top of the main boom.
Next take the equalizer with the penant lugs facing the end of the boom.
Take a brass rod and run it thru the holes of the equalizer and the holes in the lugs on the boom.
Now the equalizer is attached to the boom allowing easy reeving.

The best thing to do is to replace the thread that comes on the model with Musky Master. I would suggest using Musky Master 18 lb test as the drums are not quite big enough for all the line if you use 27 lb test.

To make changing the boom hoist line easy, just pull it all out and cut it off leaving about 4 inches on each drum. Next tie a square knot to the new line on both sides. You may want to put a dab of super glue on each knot. Cut the extra line off near the knots.

Hope this helps.

I wouldnt trust the thread that comes on the model if you are going to put the extension kit in it.

Thanks Born to Lift That helps alot. TWH should just give you the diagrams if their way of pre rigging is so sloppy. Ironic that you say to replace it with musky master. I suppose thats fishing line for Muskies. I fish for Muskies as much as possible. In fact I don't fish for anything else now. Check my user name. I'm part American Indian and thats my Indian name for fishing. On a quest for the mighty 50+ incher. Only problem is there are not alot of places to fish for Muskie around Philadelphia so I have to travel to North Central PA to fish. I use 100 lb test power pro and 130 lb test leaders. I guess thats too thick for the drums plus its green in color. I'll check some tackle places or Dick's sporting goods for musky master but they don't sell much muskie fishing stuff around here. I usually order all my stuff from Rollie and Helens Musky Shop so I'll check my catalog to see if they have it. I have a couple other questions. Did you use pins or screws to hold the mast back stops to the top of the cab and for the 3 part metal straps that brace the gantry to the crane. The directions are not real clear on this. Again thanks for all your help and I look forward to hearing back from you about those other questions.
Thanks

Born to Lift. I found it in the catalog from Rollie and Helens. I knew of Courtland line but wasn't familiar with the name Muskie Master as all my Muskie rods have Power Pro 100 lb line on them except an 8 foot Ugly Stick I use for smaller in line bucktail spinners and that has 80 lb test on it. I'll order a spool from them. Nice that it comes in black. I've only found Power Pro in green and red. My muskie rods have green and 1 Pflueger 7 foot bass rod has the red in 50lb test.
Do you do any Muskie fishing?
Thanks again

Kachema,

For the back stops for the mast use pins, and the gantry uses screws. Someone from TWH tried to tell me that no screws are needed for the ganrty as the weight of the boom holds it up. I argued that in real life the gantry has pins. With the basic 4100W lift crane kit there are no screws long enough, but with the ringer kit, there are plenty of ones that are.

Never fished for Musky. I found out about the Musky Master line from Bobm who repaints his cranes in Mammoet colors. He also replaces all the cable with the Musky Master.

I do fish on Lake Erie for Walleye and Perch. I used to fish for Salmon with my dad for years on Lake Michigan and Lake Superior.

Wow, what a weathering job!. The detail is just amazing.

As Mammoet says "SIZE DOES MATTER". Slowly collecting Mammoet 1:50 scale stuff. Mainly cranes!

Brent you really need to take a break and paint one or two of those little 1/50 construction dudes properly to display by your cranes. It is the only think missing. With the range of 1/48th scale figures on the market it sure would jazz up a model. Granted the figure would be a bit big but I'm sure it wouldn't be that noticeable.
Remember Shep's B-17 figures in that memorable diorama....
Take care,
Fritz
