Haulage of construction equipment at the France-Belgium border (models need a final coat of paint): - The French combination (on the left): DAF FT 95XF-430 4x2/2 tractor (modified Joal model) and Castera shortened SR 34 E3 3-axle flatbed semi-trailer (assembly of a homemade bed, a Joal tridem and a Conrad chassis) loaded with 12.24 tonnes of Ytong CL25 fireproof tiles (WSI load), with 44 wooden beams of unknown weight (Tekno load) and with an on-board Kooi-aap Z2-3-203 three-wheeler forklift (modified Siku model), - The Belgium set (to the right): Volvo FH12-T460 6x2/4 tractor (modified Joal model) and Kennis CL-1330-FB 3-axle flatbed semi-trailer with Kennis 14000 rolling material handling crane (Lion Toys crane on a modified flatbed from Joal origin) carrying 6.12 tonnes of Ytong fireproof tiles (WSI load) and 15.12 tonnes of Van Thuyne VS25/100 honeycombed slabs (Tekno load). That Volvo looks so much better,I think the original Joal tractor had a bit too long wheelbase,and limited the truck to low-loader duties.Those Tekno wheels look good,with that cab.Did you,put the Joal cab on a Tekno chassis?or,was more work needed?

Guy those honey combed slabs are know as flexi core in our neck of the woods, and I have never seen them in 1/50 scale before they are nice. Steve

modelmaniac, The Volvo frame was a Joal chassis modified to get the additional 2nd axle fitted. Most of European 2-axle FH Volvos have a wheelbase of 3.6 metres, which is correctly modelled by Joal at 7.2 cm (equal to 3.6m in a 1/50 scale). As far as 6x4s are concerned, 2 types of wheelbases existed and the Joal model is corresponding to the longer (and heavier) one. For comparison purposes, both 6x4 wheelbases below: the short one (modified Joal on top) and the long one (original Joal chassis at bottom): I hope this helps. Guy

So,you had a 4x2,added an axle,and wheels?So it was always the correct length.Did not know about the two wheelbases,just knew the Joal one was too long for some trailers.Makes sense they modelled the longest version.Well done with that shortened Volvo.It looks right,with that trailer.

modelmaniac, Yes, I have changed Joal wheels into Teknos: at that time, I didn't have enough Joal front wheels to do the mods. Here below, 2 sketches of Volvo FHxx II 4x2/2 and 6x2/4 tractors (I assume that 1st generation versions had the same dimensions): As you can see, the 4x2/2 unit exists in 4 different wheelbases, while there are 2 for the 6x2/4. I had to add 6mm to the Joal chassis to change their standard 4x2/2 into the short wheelbase 6x2/4. I hope this helps. Guy

The DAF-Kögel combination, emblematic of a period when driver's comfort - he had to climb from inside the cab to the top "box" for some sleep - was not that important compared to some extra-volume: The more conventional Scania-Kögel combination, where the trailer drawbar design is the only thing allowing for some extra-volume on-board: To be continued. In that competition for the largest possible volume with a conventional cab, the short drawbar ATR concept was developed by the French trailer builder SEG-Samro. This system allowed for the trailer to be as near as possible from its tractor in strait line and sensors, fitted on the front of the trailer, acted on the hydraulic drawbar in curves and elongated it, as the truck back end increased the pressure on them. This innovative approach lost all interest when, late nineties, European road legislation defined individual boxes maximal length and froze overall combination dimension at 18.75 metres: DAF FA 95XF-430 4x2/2 fitted with a Samro box (modified Joal model, to be painted) and Samro/??? T3 ATC 1+2-axle dropside sheeted drawbar trailer (modified Lion Car model, to be painted) Regards. Guy

I asked Jean-Jacques about the bucket: it comes from a collection of one of his friends and has been repainted by him to look like an Esco equipment. He doesn't know who originally built it, it could be a Gas Evans bucket. I hope this helps. Guy

Many thanks for your positive comments. I like upgrading old models and mainly rely on information found in old magazines or books to do it: curiously enough, if infos on vintage trucks are easy to find on the web, details and reliable data on obsolete trailers and semi-trailers is more difficult to get.

We are still on French roads beginning of the nineties: - On the left: Bedford TM 4400 4x2/2 tractor (modified Conrad model) and DAF 3-axle sheeted dropside semi-trailer (modified Lion Car model), - On the right: Mercedes-Benz 1838 LS 4x2/2 tractor (Lion Car model) and Le Capitaine Espace 3-axle reefer semi-trailer fitted with sides full opening doors (modified Conrad box on modified Tekno chassis, to be painted). Even if the concept was favored in Northern Europe, the full side opening trailer was not very successful in France and its production never reached high numbers. Such semi-trailers simply disappeared as curtainsiders emerged: Regards. Guy
