Nice pics. Our new 385C came from the proving grounds. When the boys were putting it together for the first job they noticed that none of the grease fittings had ever seen a gun. The rotex, bucket and boom pins fittings still had paint on them and were dry as a desert. (the machine had 125 hours on it) Cat did make it good though. They replaced all the bushings and pins, and installed an auto grease system on it. Jason

Thanks for posting the photos. Were you down there for a class? I went to track type tractor school down there. I had a great time.

Nice pics! In my opinion the new Cat machines are awesome. Those F Series trucks look sharp.

I am tipping the 93D was giving a demo of a panic stop judging by the attitude of the truck and the slight bulge in pos 1

Great and rare collection of pics Andy, Thanks for the post!! The other link appears to have older pics, not the newer units like these, but still a good collection. I bet they watch where cameras go on that site like a hawk!! Some realy special things going on there now I am sure... Lots of neat things to come soon.

The pictures posted here and on the link were all shot the same day. The link posted by Vinny were all shot 2 years ago at Tijana Hills. Tinaja Hills has a pretty wide collection of machinery. They get in the new stuff bit by bit. The 140M arrived about 4 days earlier. The 24H is scheduled to be replaced with a 24M soon. And from what I was told, the D11R has been sold and they will be getting a D11T soon. As far as cameras, well, we were in the demonstration area. (There are 4 actually, a general construction area, which the pictures I shot were taken, a quarry area (including the low overhead machines), a building construction area where they demo the smaller equipment, and the paving products area. As long as you're in the demonstration area, Cat encourages photos. The Proving Grounds, however, are off limits. You can barely see it from the hacienda. From the main entrance, you could see some 797 dump trucks with their beds up & the hood of a 993 which was at the proving grounds for some publicity photos.

Hmmm... a Canon 30D at Tinaja. That doesn't seem like a typical enthusiast -- are you with the press? But great pics regardless! No. I'm a software developer. The 30D is a nice camera. Not really out of the reach of the photography enthusiast (actually since they released the 40D, it's come down even more). Photography has been an interest of mine since college, although I just started shooting digital about a year & a half ago. I really want to get a 1Ds, but that will really cut into the model budget Besides, I'd rather spend the money on lenses. They're what's really important. Here's some of my other, non-equipment, photography (Had the weather been nicer, I would have done more photography in Arizona. Definitely have to go back): San FranciscoBrooklyn Bridge/Lower Manhattan

I am glad to see the rain didn't mess up the visit for you guys. The photos make me feel bummed that I did not head down this year. Although it looks like close to the same stuff I saw last time (with the exception of the F series haulers and the 994F). When I was there last they had the 994F on order.
But I hear it was a great time yet again! How was the BBQ?

Justin,
Nothing is mined at Tanaja, it's Caterpillar's Proving Grounds and demonstration-training area. There is, however, a copper mine next that Cat has a deal with to continue field testing.
Christopher,
The BBQ was tasty and the rain held off enough that the day was fine. I didn't go the 1st year, so it was cool to get to Tanaja for the 1st time. I was in Peoria. I'll definitely go back to Tanaja. I like Arizona and there's lots of other stuff to do, especially if the weather is nice, which it is for the other 363 days a year. I really wanted to explore some more and take some pictures of the scenery, but the weather did not cooperate for that.

Thanks for the reply... sent you a private message.

And how does one get invited to this event? (What is the event?) I sent you a long winded reply to your PM. Classic Construction Models hosts it every year. They post the info on their site. All you need to do is call them and pay for it. Someone posted info about it here, too. They usually announce it at the end of the summer. It's basically a day of checking out equipment, watching the demo, getting a little stick time, this year a ride in the 793. It's just cool to hang out, check out equipment I don't see here on the East Cost (like the 994), talk to the guys at CCM on what new models they are coming out with (Let's just say, I'm pretty happy about the 1:87 lineup coming out). The stick time is OK, but not the reason I go (although, it was cool to check out the new 140M grader. Pretty slick). Next year is back in Peoria. Peoria is cool, because there are factory tours. The Track Type Tractor factory tour was cool last year.

Adding to what's already been said about Tinaja, much of the proving ground is located on the lower edges of the Sierrita mine's "K" waste dump. I used to love sitting on the dump and watching the brand new iron running around.
That 994F came over as an "emergency" loaner a few times when our 994 was down.
