I took these this morning at a quarry in Doncaster, UK. The Volvo is a 5 axle - the extra axle having been added by AMC themselves. AMC are based in Devon, South West England and the truck is very much a one-off.

I have posted these before I think but here is a few of another of their units. Its always in a yard in Stratford upon Avon where I live. Ive still not worked out just what they do there but there is an awful lot of lattice jibs and poking up and also what looks to be large piling/boring machines.

Not exactly easiest place to take photos due to situation and fences. It could possibly be a testing centre of sorts because these AMC chaps are forever coming and going with large loads.

This was in supermarket car park....just down the road.

Perhaps they are something like Van der Vlist. They also have many machines around on their yard. Might be a distributor to new customers.

Thankyou

For our friends around the world, 'Yorkies' are chocolate bars, forever associated with trucking, due to a TV advert back in the early 1980's which featured a big Scammell!

Unfortunately, WBB Minerals wouldn't let me into the quarry for H&S reasons, but they agreed to let me stay on their access road which was actually a good spot for photographing. He pulled up there to adjust the trailer which meant I had about 10-15 mins with it.

That by far is my favorite truck. I think I will have to make a custom one day. Do they have a website. Any more pics of the company.

Yes - the 5th axle of the tractor steers - 1,2 and 5 steer - 3&4 drive.

Regarding the Yorkie Ad, I think they did one with a DAF, but there was definately a Scammell one too.

I think the rear axle is a single. There was a feature in a British trucking mag about it a few months ago and a photo shows the last axle at a really weird looking angle.

With 610hp this thing could turn it's self.

Wasnt the FH16 - 610 the most powerful production high-way truck in the world?

Apparently they went to the different companies who specialise in additional steering axles (usually adding one to make a 3 axle into 4 in this country) and they didn't want to know because AMC wanted a postive-steer rear axle. (ie one which is controlled from the steering wheel rather than one which simply followslike a lot of trailers have).

Perhaps this is because the rear axle has to turn the opposite direction. AMC said there is hardly any tyre scrub.

You got it Jake, rumor has it that our safety department is planning to do the same thing on our 345's. It remains to be seen if it actually happens though.

Jim
