While in Chile I visited Minera Esperanza which is a new copper mine that has recently opened by Antofagasta Minerals. They are operating 3 new P&H 4100XPC's and a fleet of 797B dump trucks. I was fortunate enought to climb over one of these massive dumptrucks. I was a dream come true! Here are the pictures. Note I am 6'6" tall for a size comparison.

Enjoy!

Great shots Tim, looks like a good trip.

I have worked with those DT bodies on a fleet of 830E Komatsu,s and when you first see them you just say "no way"!!! but once you watch them and see how they work you then begin to understand where the weight saving adds to more material hauled and it can be a true throw away body.

Those DT's really shine on a leach pad - where you might get 3 Cat MSD beds (or one Liebherr) in a single spot, you'll get 5 or 6 DT's over.

Yeah which makes that truck seem smaller than it usually looks. Teeth

These are great photos....good for you.
I hope to get a chance to see one of these trucks in person someday soon.
Thanks for sharing these photos here.

What a chance did you get !! I have a small hope to see some 797B' next summer... I will keep DHS forum up to date...

MitchTim, could you please share some pics of the incredibly nice 4100XPC (I believe the ones at Eperanza are yellow/black... that is to say one of the best livery, to my mind)

Thanks

interesting to see the DT high load on a 797 have used them with komatsu 930es and on the dump you can shoot/chute your load over the bund which makes for a happy dozer driver they look weird but seem to work well.

Great pics! What exactly is the advantage of those DT beds Think I see them on a lot of trucks in the 300 ton range.

I can relate to your excitement , almost !! I got to actually drive a Cat 789C, and dump the box. I also got to ride in a Cat 793 for over an hour being loaded by a RH-200 and riding up the mountain and dumping passing other 793's , but I know I would be VERY EXCITED to climb on the biggest , baddest Cat Haul Truck of all, VERY Cool !!

Who can we expect to make a model of this monster? the existing 797 model which made by NZG is no detail, i hope TWH or brami can make it real...

I would expect Norscot to make either a 797F or a 795F AC in the next 12 months. Keep an eye out for the 2009 model releases! If it is anything like the current 793D trucks we will be in for a great model!!!

But i really prefer it to be make by maker other than Norscot... because they always don't build an engine for it... very very dissappointed.

JustinE,

The truck has a basic Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), when you lighten the dump box, the truck can carry an increased payload.

What does DT & MSD stand for? Are the DT beds disposable then? Do they tip the spoil in a better way?Think

DT are from an after market truck body manufacturer, that used to be known as Duratray and are a fairly common sight in South America. The Big coal mine complex at Cerrejon have Hitachis with these bodies on them. They are very light and some designs are very smooth so material does not stick or hang up easily in the body.

MSD is a mine specific design or dump and is a CAT product. They are heavier, and more robust, but therefore cannot carry as much for the same GVW, but the body will last much longer.

The focus of mines and hence of this discussion, is that there will be line of payload carried against cost of body replacement and if your lighter body can carry 50 tonnes more, but only lasts 1000 trips, then that is an additional 50,000 tonnes carried. However, the equation gets more complex because with the rising cost of fuel, an additional 50ktonnes more, for the same GVW / trip as an MSD type body, which has also done 1000 trips, is a big saving of fuel. Because for the 300 tonne MSD bodied truck, that equals a further 166 trips to carry the same amount of material. That is a lot of fuel for a body that lasts longer. The final factor to consider is that fuel burnt is usually roughly proportional to the total weight at the time, therefore if the truck is lighter running empty back to the shovel, there is probably a small saving in fuel to be made.

Careful truck / body / utilisation can have a massive impact on the running costs of a big mine.
