Bucyrus had a display of the full sized crowd cylinder used in the 495 shovels with the "HydraCrowd" option. It was huge and is installed inside the tubular dipper handle. A hydraulic system is installed on the shovel in the same location as the standard crowd drum would be.. in the front of the machinery deck. The unit has been testing at Albian Sands for some time and they now feel its nearly ready for release as an option. They will also offer them as retrofits for 67 foot boom 495's.Also the security was very heavy around the HydraCrowd as they had some very tough security guards standing by in case someone wanted to steal the cylinder..

Some truth is needed here:

The cylinder of topic is 2/3 scale and is a static fixed piece (not a real unit). It is a real as the "police girls" breasts! You can simply see that it is not long/tall enough to provide the needed range of crowding.

I watched some videos of the HF with HydraCrowd and it looked like the machine was really slow retracting the dipper-stick.

Although I was told many times by various Bucyrus personnel that this will be the standard next year and the rope crowd will be the option, but I don't believe it.

In my personal opinion; the most effecient way of crowding is by rack & pinion. I would like to hear other's opinions.

Please use this before clicking "post"??? You may be surprised with what you see!

That security seems appropriate for such a big rod!

I agree, in fact, I think anybody who has had to do a crowd or retract rope change would agree . The rack and pinion system is so simple to run and maintain, but I think with time, the Hydracrowd system will be an improvement on the ropes.
