Hey John give me a couple of weeks and I will get you some shots. We don't usually use the flow boys we just use a regular semi. But when I get back I will send you some pics of the rotto-mill, pavers and flow boys. If you want if we get lucky because not everybody up here uses the "Michigan Special" I will try to get you some pictures.

Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.

Very good, we use Triaxle's for 99.% of the time for paving & grinding. I would appreciate any pictures you have using the Michigan Specials..................

Thanks again, from another Paver,
Central Ontario

Guys, we have a member here by the name of AJAXMAN. He might have a shot or two of their flowboys. I have a few somewhere, but cant locate which computer they are one. Anyways, ill share a few I shot this afternoon, and a few from the past. These trailers really only haul two products. I have never seen one working with a grinder. They really only haul asphalt out of the plants to pavers. Other than that, they usually haul sand to the plant. May even haul stone in other parts of the state.

No doubt where these were built to run with a sticker like this

Now a few of the "short double" version. These are pulled by tri axle conventional dump trucks plumbed with air and hydraulics to the pintail hitch so they can pull these trailers.

The downside to Michigan style trailers. They are tough on tires, no one ever puts a new tire on a trailer here, they always go with caps, and run them as long as possible. The tires on this one are a little on the bald side. Worse than normal, but the company that owns these trailers hasnt run them in a few years, so they may have switched tires off of their trains onto these.

Ajax Paving's web page has a grinder loading a flowboy trailer. 2o years ago we use to load these trailers with a Rx45 rear loading grinder, an old Barber Green machine in parking lots, full depth excavation, or open pit mining. Just a little history of grinders.

Crazy axles on those trailers, I just still don't understand why. We have the same flowboys around here and I think the most on them are tri-axle, maybe even a quad.

20,000 lbs per two axles is our general rule of thumb. But we do have a few different axle combinations that allow more. We have a "super train" combination, that allows a tandem axle tractor to haul 164,000 lbs. By the time its all said and done, when that truck leaves your site they just left 55 tons of material.

As for the flowboys working with grinders, im sure it has been done. Around here they almost always work with the pavers, not grinders. This may be because the grinding crew comes through a week or two before the paving crew. Once the road is profiled, a crew comes behind and repairs any issues that are below the wear surface. Then they also repair any concrete, and raise or lower any manholes or that type of structures. Then the paving crew comes in after that.

John,

I am known on the forum as "AJAX MAN". I work for Ajax Paving Industries, Inc. here in Michigan and if you want some pic's of flowboy trailers and pavers, I have some. The only problem is I have trouble posting pics on the forum here. I would love to show pics of our equipment, especially the trucks and trailers. If you want, send me your e-mail address and I will forward some pics to you...

And Thank You for looking at and recognizing our web-site. Ajax just updated our website late last fall and they really did a great job. I think we have one of the best websites out there now for any kind of concrete or asphalt paving contractor....www.ajaxpaving.com

Dirtboy....nice video. That Barber Greene paver is a little outdated, but it still lays asphalt. Who was the paving contractor who did the project? I tried to read it off the video, but it was difficult to make out the name. It looked like Reith Riley Const., but they usually run Blaw Knox pavers...

Brian, The project looks to have been in my neck of the woods. Not sure on the contractor. Deffinately not Saginaw, ACE, Pyramid. The only outfit up here that still has a barber greene would be Louis Kay. But they just seem to be sticking with grinding. Im trying to remember who is out of MT Pleasent. But none of he trucks work for the usual suspects in this area
