Hey everyone, went back to where they are dredging today and when we went to where it was, it was not working. Then we turned around to head home and i said "lets check if it is working now" and we passed it and they were starting the beast up..! This is the largest dredge in the world, i am told.. You can see a crane attached to the main boom, that is to lift the boom because the soil they are digging in, its to hard and the pistins can't handle it.. Buckets range in between 7 and 25 yards. The 7 yard bucket is for hard rock. The 25 yard one is for mud and dirt. I belive the bucket we saw on it was a 25 yard one but im not sure. They have to change the teeth on the bucket 20 times a day!! If you look closly at some of the pictures, it has a ladder on the main boom so its not a small excavator...They have been doing this project since 1999, The project will end in a few months......

Great lakes dredge and dock took on the ission of deepining the NY and NJ harbor by 50 feet and +. They bought a custom made Liebherr P996 dredging excavator. The crane that is lifting the 996's boom is custom made by Great lakes, if you look in the pictures you can see a decal on the crane that says "patent pending".

Starting up..

The first 5 minutes when he started it up, he waited there for a couple of mins, then he stared to dig..

Now we can dig!!

Dumping the first scoop of dirt and mud..

Seeing this thing work is absolutly amazing..!

Then they had to move the barge because he couldnt dig at the angle he had to dig at..

Look how big that scoop is!

Got a lot of water in this one.

Digging deep.

Another big bucketfull

Dumping it...

Swinging around

MAking a big splash!

Ain't it an awesome view!

Hope you liked the pics.....

cool!!, really good pics!
the wire to the boom is interesting!, i wonder is it an assist line or a recovery line if something fails.. engine hydraulics etc. i see it has a patent pending anyway!. maybe it is to assist with bigger bucket or boulders. very interesting!, thanks for sharing!

ill edit now that i have went back and read the start of the post i understand the cable lol

great pics!!! you got very close!!

whats the deal with the wire rope connecting to the boom,is it some sort of safety/rescue device for the boom??

Why is "phonetically" spelt with a "ph"?

... It's better to be silent and thought a fool, then to speak up and remove all doubt

The complex of Newgrange was originally built between c. 3100 and 2900 BC,[2] meaning that it's aproximately 5,000 years old. According to Carbon-14 dates,[3] it is more than 500 years older than the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, and predates Stonehenge by about 1,000 years.

PS. I'm pretty sure the BA1100 is slightly bigger (still massive none the less)....

So is that an assist cable or a safety recovery cable. My guess would be assist as if it needed to be recovered you could wlak out there and attache one anyway. Anybody iknow for sure???

Its basically used to assist the lift cylinders so it can boom up.

Here are some of Sals pictures.

Look at all that mud!

Getting ready to dump its load

Getting another bucketfull

This one was all water!

Going down...

All the way down! 83 feet deep

Some close ups
You can see a camera attached to the railing on the cat walk, im guessing it is for more visability..

This is the crane attached to the boom

Great Pics!!! Yes the BA 1100's are much larger machines, three of them are working now at least, and more coming. Also several 996's are set up for dredge operations. I know of at least four of them, and several 995's. DonJon Marine has a 995 that was brand new a couple years ago.

Thanks! This is what I heard from my other post which I heard too.

"Only 2 Liebherr P996 pontoon-mounted backhoes are currently in service in the world.A third P996 called the 'Tauracavor' sunk while on tow in the open ocean a few years back and was salvaged but I do not think it was ever "revived" so to speak!!The sister to the 'New York' is called the 'Pinnochio' and is currently working on the harbour widening/deepening project in my hometown of Durban,South Africa. It is owned by DEME/Dredging International.I have many pics of this particular excavator if anyone is interested."

I know these pictures could have been taken months and probably even years ago but I thought they were interesting.

I found this on Bing Maps about a month ago.

I also just found another I think. If you follow the river to the right on this one there appears to be another working as well but I could just be the same one.

I also noticed this. At the top you can see the P996 docked and at the bottom it looks like three of the O&K 120's used at Fresh Kills to unload the barges. I wonder what they were doing there? Maybe Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. bought them.
