I remember reading about this a while ago but can someone please remind me what ES stands for? Was it 'Extreme Service' ? From memory it meant that the machine was fitted with a beefed up yet narrower undercarriage.

What are some of the other designations of the CAT excavator range....

L
ME
MH
FS
LR
LN
ES
LCR
UHD
LVA
LNVA

And since when did cat ever produce a 338CL? It appears to have an extended counterweight. Perhaps the '8 designation was just a custom sticker job?

Looks like you are both right on the CR designation. I know at first Cat was using the term close radius but it looks like now they are using compact radius like all the others. Don't forget the U designation which was for utility and has now been replaced with RR for reduced radius. As far as the ES I belive that they use the track frames from the next size class up bolted to the standard carbody. So the 345 ES has 365 track frames bolted to the standard 345 carbody, not a narrow one.

On a quick glance, the 345 look like it may have a 365 bottom under it, as well as a 365 class bucket and linkage on the stick. It looks bigger than the "F" style linkage standard on a 345/350 size machine. I bet it is an "H" style bucket linkage.

I would like on for loading trucks, that is for sure.

That rings a bell now that you mention it! Thanks... Here's some more pics of a 365CESME and a 345CESME.

Those ES machines are much more interesting with the extra guarding.

I agree, I love the inner stick lining and rock guard, gives the machine a much more aggressive look.

Anyone have anymore info on the 338CL?
