One of the local highway departments here just purchased this nice Cat RM500 road reclaimer, this thing is sweet! Here are a few pictures from a project they are doing with it now. Within the next month or so it will be doing the road behind my house so I hope to get some pictures of it working. Enjoy the pics!

That is called a "grid design" and has been in use for many, many years. It is a special application type steel drum, usually on "crack and seat" jobs where they crack the pavement (usually concrete) and pound the hell out of it with a vibratory roller for a new sub-base then they top with asphalt pavement. Oakland County Road Commission use's this technique alot here in Michigan.

I am surprised that a county agency purchased such a machine (they are probably turning existing roads back to gravel, since many road agencies cannot afford to keep up with the cost of maintenance or repairs). Many County Road agencies in Michigan (especially the more Northern Counties) have started to return paved roads back into gravel roads, because they are cheaper to maintain than paved roads.....that really makes alot of sense....spend millions to construct, resurface or repair to eventually turn it back into gravel because someone in Lansing does not know how to balance a budget or say no to special interest groups like the MEA...

Thanks, They will be adding fresh asphalt eventually the roads that are being re-built are heavily traveled. I too am surprised that our county purchased this it can't be a cheap machine to buy/maintain. As a matter of fact it is still sitting in the same spot since last week so it's not getting used as much as one might think. There are going to be quite a few large road rebuild projects starting up in the next few months. the only problem is the roads being re-done are in good condition compared to the ones that really need it!

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Are you sure Jennifer Granholm isn't your governor too?
