GC1 wrote:Got any pics of the horse drawn cranes.. A few horse drawn cranes existed back in 1900.The company I work for had them. They used them at Sydneys waterfront to load other carts. The poor old horse used to back up to the load ,the poor old crane driver had to hand crank up the load on the jib and the another cart was backed under. The old boss used to tell me stories about horses in transport and cranes. He was 98 when he passes on about 10 years ago and a real big fan of horses. There was one story he told me about the poor old horse at Druitt st.This horse spent its whole life at the bottom of Druitt st in Sydney and for a small fee the owner would hook this horse onto the front of your horse and help pull up Druitt St.When it got to the top it was un hooked and taken back down to do it all again.Day in day out year after year. The other one he remenbers was when they got the first truck back in bout 1919 or something .The security guard came to the yard and decided to sneak off som where. He tied his dog to the back of a cart.Well it wasnt a cart it was the new truck. The driver arrived and off he went . It took about 1 mile before the poor dog just couldnt run any more. The driver was wondering why every one was waving at him as he was driving up through Redfern.Thought it was his new truck. But it was what he was towing behind the truck.RIP the dog. There is a book being written on the history of cranes in Aust.( a guy in Brisbane doing it Sort of nearly finised but a while off publishing)And in his research he found that we had the only record of the horse drawn crane. There was plenty of early motorised stuff .HE is a nice guy and gave me 2 c ds of pics on the promice I dont show them off untill at least the ook is done.It will be a very good book there is some choice pics there.Especially the post war stuff.

Good yarn there Red...sounds like a book for the library here.
When I was a youngster there were derricks at every train yard and they were everywhere here when they harvested the cane by hand. All hand cranked also.

I missed out the other day, The Engineering Company, use to be Tas Engineering/Tas Crane Service, had there entire fleet out in the open. The have 2 new terex/franna cranes(bread like rabbits down here, no bull), there bigger linmac "big foot", a volvo type thing, there AC50 demag, 40 tonne Tadano and lastly the huge P&H lattice boom crane. Why there were out in the open i don't know but cause i didn't have my cmaera, missed out on a great photo, poop. There is a new livery too, use to be Australian colours, green with a nice shade of yellow. Now a darkish shade of blue with white and yellow lettering.

Well thats not good but then again the GFC is only starting to hit business's now according to my parents who run a transport business, the company i work for, (HF Hand Constructors) over the past year we have only had 2 jobs, NCIG Kooragang Island Coal Loader Expansion 1x700 tonne bin and Mt Arthur Coal washery expansion 2 modules. Bit slow but its slowly picking up, especially here in the Valley.
