Nice work and some great looking models. I shot some of my early dios against an oil refinery backdrop and found maintaining proper depth of field was a bit of an issue. My backdrop was pretty large (3'x6') so I could shoot my subject matter far enough away from the background to "create" a proper depth. In other words, the transition from the sharp focus of my subject matter to the slightly out-of-focus background appeared gradual.

footloose52 wrote:...I will have to do a little more practicing... Thanks Peter Yup, it is pretty much just trial and error. The refinery worked well because the backdrop was large enough to be set 3 or 4 feet behind my dio - giving more of an illusion of being far off in the distance. I also found shooting the scene from ground level (or the same elevation as the backdrop) was effective. Besides displaying a proper depth of field, one needs the same perspective for both backdrop and subject matter. Another dio pic which shows the problem with shooting the subject from a different perspective than your backdrop. I'm shooting the Peterbilt from above - maybe at 30 degrees or so, but the backdrop was shot from ground level (0 degrees) so it comes out looking like well, a flat picture. Here the illusion obviously doesn't work - I can see the top of the tractor, the roof is facing the viewer - but the refinery tank tops are not visible as they should be.

Ulf, That looks like a Peterbilt to me! Nice photographs, I like the idea of a backdrop, really adds a sense of reality, however, a little work on the base would add tremendously to the overall impression. Randy M. Smolenack RMSmodels@aol.comrandy.m.smolenack@us.army.mil
