The 14000 is awesome, the 345 bucket is humungous, and the 777 is pure junk. Google "Manitowoc 777" and you'll find the story Vinny is talking about. They are just plain dangerous, they boom up when you boom down... It's not a good feeling. They should be banned from the entire earth! I've heard that the Army still uses them and just ordered more recently. Why? I have no idea

These two machines are similar in capacity with the 14000 being about 10% nominally stronger and offering more main boom. It is interesting that Manitowoc would today build two machines so close to each other.
I am suspicious that the 14000 is a re-engineering of the old 888 and was introduced into the line to satisfy those not wanting the hydraulic boom hoist as well as more directly addressing the needs of foundation and other duty cycle work users.
I believe you are seeing some, "may the best crane win" and an effort to not under cut the values of the 777s in use.

I have been operating a 1999 Manitowoc 777 for the past eighteen months...I'll have to admit that I was a little concerned about the rams...I read a story about one bleeding down at a shell refinery in the U.S...  I was and still am very happy with it...I found out that if you blow a hose or get a hydraulic oil change, any air in the rams, will cause erratic boom control. At the same time, Manitowoc gives a step by step walkthrough on how to bleed off any air, as well a recalibrate the controls, and bring hydraulic pressures right back up to snuff...The boom is very smooth, precise, and quick if need be...

The one I was in had 240 ft. of boom and would boom up instead of down. Also, it would jump erratically if you even clicked the boom up or down a click. The thing would boom up or down a couple degrees just barely touching it. ALL came and replaced the motherboard, and a transducer, and it was fine for a bit then went bonkers again. There is no smooth or precise about this one!

And the boom did fall once on a different rental on the same job. Someone else was running it and the boom dropped about 40 feet as if someone had slashed the pendants-
I think the reason they are still around is because they are cheap to rent. And sadly, companies who haven't had trouble with a 777 continue to gamble with them because of the almighty $$$
