Haven't been posting on this board lately but thought I'd share this mile stone on my 9yr build thus far.
Here's some progress on the boom.
Here's a drawing of the boom but some small changes and details still need to be ironed out.

Fixture for side of first section.

This is the first piece of tube cut and notched of hundreds:D

Checking for fit.

I got some more done with the boom hoist and some on the base of the boom where it attaches to the revolving frame.
Motor pinion

Boom hoist worm gear and a graphic of it on the monitor on my mill.

Cutting mounting plates

Very cool! How much might a milling machine like that cost?

I lucked into that mill about 12yrs ago. My favorite used equipment dealer got it in and was pretty ugly with just black dirt all over it. Under it was a nice Bridgeport with a Southwestern ProtoTrak MX3 and he only wanted $6000 for it and he thought two came in and I would have bought both but that didn't happen. It's alittle old but it serves me faithfully. But new probably around 25-30K

Thanks you guys. Last night I spent 3hrs trying to miter and notch the first 3/16'' dia diagonal brace 2.04'' long at the bottom of the boom only to find out I have to make a small v block fixture to hold the tube out further to gain some clearance for the slotting saw and make it more rigid not to bend . I definitely need to speed this process up. I never did count how many pieces need cut and notchedThink

Nice machine work like the hogging out of the gear very cool .Here is a little tip for you production wise on the strut tubes.Make a simple block fixture vise jaw length, drill for tube dia. six places. Tap for 1 or 2 set screws above each tube hole one each side. Now you can machine six struts at a time and they are 100% in line.On each side.Smile "The hardest part of machining is always holding the damn part for access ! "

I can only mill one at a time because everyone of them are a different length and angle.
Here's my fixture I made up. Now they're supported better and stick out further so the saw won't hit the vice.

9W ..The swivelvise with my fixture will let you slot and mill 6 struts using the quick change, one for endmill the other for slitting saw. However its your call... but I would support the end so it don't walk down on you with parralles in last pic when slotting !

You have a picture of your setup?
I'm moving along now and should have both sides of the first 62' foot section (46.5'') Haven't had any trouble with my vee fixture.

No picture or diagram can't scan anymore, but if it works your way... no problem.

Thanks, The Cat is the 7C15 "Small 15" version,307 built. Same size as the older TEN crawler. It's my first antique Caterpillar I restored 18yrs ago. I need to do some touch up on it now since we've used it in the dirt.
