Do A.L.E have two, reason I ask is I passed the AK912 on the back of two low loaders today. I though it got burnt out last year. Can anyone shed some light on the matter.

The burnt unit was repaired yes. Except for the repair, the capacity was also increased to 1200t Wink

Back when the AK912 was being designed,TV's were still running on vacuum tubes.
Not having a full grasp into the stress's and strengths of materials back in the day, just about every plate cut to go into it was a little more than was thought was needed,A 1000t mobile crane was a ground breaking acheivement. They were extremely well built. Even in the early 80's it was thought that the capacity could top 1200t,nobody would dare stamp it.

Today with Rockwell hardness test, laser metallurgical testing ,the type and content of a material can easily be assessed. With engineers knowing exactly what material's are where and its composition, the crane can be loaded into a computer and tested.

When it was upgraded it lost the Burnt-out chassis and is now a pedastal, I Guess it was leaving the new power station being built where it has been for a while. Mammoets LG 1750 is still there i think.

You could have told me. Lol. The powerstation is just down the road, I didn't know it was there. Might have a road trip to see if the Mammoet is there.

I remember recently seeing a picture of the crane with the full 10-axle chassis on road. I can't remember where though

Not "one of those". That one and only - only one MK1000/MK1500 has been built, but it features an 11 axle carrier.

Sorry for going a bit off topic but can someone please explain to me why Gottwald with the MK1500 (and some other manufacturers eg: Krupp 500 GMT) went with the smaller wheels on the rear of the carrier and we don't see that with any modern cranes?

The MK 1500 is more of a Tractor unit and trailer, The Carrier being the tractor unit and the Crane and the rear bogie being the trailer. The Mk1000 Was upgraded to the MK 1500.

The said AK 912 was i think previously owned by Baldwins.

See the MK 1500 here:

Hi Folks
AK912 was previously owned by Baldwins, after the fire damage it was repaired by Claxton international in Cheshire at a cost of a million plus, there are rumors that A.L.E were going to put it back in truck form, however now that it has been run as a pedestal crane for a while, i would imagine they will leave it as it is. The MK 1500 was originaly sparrows 1000 ton crane MK 1000,uprated by Grayston White and Sparrows it was aquired by A.L.E who also operate it as a pedestal crane in Asia, i believe they have plans to mount it on tracks.
