I was going thru some pics tonight, and since its mud season I thought I would post some pics from the oilsands. Some might have seen these, some not. Anyway they are among my favourite "stuck" pics. It happens more than you might think in those mines. Maybe the toughest mining conditions in the world in those operations all things considered. The volume of big equipment thats up in that area now is beyond imagination. These pictures are from a few years ago now.

Holy Crap!!!!! Thank you for these great pictures! Do you know what happened? It looks like it was digging in to an established cut.

Just digging top cut. Really soft underneath, and sometimes it just opens up under you, and down you go.

Hi Tim, thanks for posting the pictures.

Looks like the 4100 was sitting on some frost and it broke thru.

Brian do you recall what size O&K is at the front end of the shovel?
I still like that color combination the best.

In the first pic, what did they use the back hoe for, cart the drinks and sandwiches? Wouldn't be much good for anything else?

That's a cable tractor, it's used for handling the power cable for the shovel, and they would have had cable work to do to get the rest of the equipment in there.

Forgive me for asking the obvious but how do you get it out, cut a ramp and drive it out? I should think the operator had a heart stopping moment as the world suddenly starts to tilt.

That's pretty much what you do Kevin, the only thing to add is you hook a couple D11s onto it with cable slings to help it along.

That's pretty impressive, does anyone know how long this operation took to recover the machine?

Discovery Channel should do a series about these guys. I think that would be interesting. They do a series on just about everything else.

It varies, sometimes it takes a couple of hours, and sometimes it takes a couple of days. In this particular instance, I couldn't really say for sure, but it doesn't look all that bad. I would say this one took around 6 hours if I had to guess.

I actually sent a treatment to a company I worked for a couple times with that exact idea. No reply. The way the business works, that could mean one of three things... 1. They have a bimbo that just deletes email all day. 2. They thought it was retarded. 3. They like it and just want to steal the idea. Wink
