Very nice pictures! Looks just like a job out here, only the skidders would have swing booms and the buncher would be a leveler.
Are you an enviromentist, or do you work for a living?

Thanks for posting. I am not sure why the track skidders have an advantage. I would think the cost of new undercarridges would be expensive.

The number one advantage to a track skidder is there gradeability. For the most part the outfits out here use them to bull the wood down off of steep hillsides to the main trail, where the wheel skidders will come and grab it and yard it on to the landing. They also use them to build skid trails, repair the haul roads, and plow snow. Over on the coast, they use track skidders alot in selective cuts and thinnings were it is almost impossible to shovel log, or not cost effective to set up a yarder. The wetter ground over there also dictates a track machine over a wheeled one. For the most part, you never skid more than 1000 feet with a 517,or 527. So really the undercarriage costs aren't that expensive. And you're going forward 2/3rds of the time so there isn't the wear from hi-speed reverse, like on a dirt dozer.
