interesting to see a triple boom that is clearly setup for digging and not demo of any kind (no Aux lines on the stick)

yeah it is weird, its just probably for the extra reach

Nothing runs like a deere with a cat on its back but the link belt ate both of them

Good stuff Vinny, you've really been finding some interesting things lately!

How is a three piece boom operated? On our PC160, the right joystick is boom/bucket and the left joystick is swing/stick - what happens when you add that third section?

I would imagine it's much like a high-reach, the one's I've run had controls where the mid-stick is controlled either by :

a) a foot pedal, or
b) by pressing a button with on the left control lever in combination with pushing the stick out. the button would override the normal stick cylinder flow and divert it to the mid-stick. (the more common pattern)

90% of the time the mid stick is not operated, used mainly for positioning to the desired radius or angle, then operated as if it is a fixed boom

I was guessing that there was a toggle switch on the joystick, or something to that effect, but I wasn't really sure. Interesting though, I never really thought about this stuff until I actually got into the cab.

The third section is of great assistance when digging deep holes. When in the dirt business, used both long stick 325B and had one of these extra stick sections for our 235s. It precluded the need to place a crane on the job but still allowed us to reach to the bottom of many basements from the street that were otherwise out of the reach on standard long reach options on excavators. Worst I have even been involved in required three excavators in staged on ledges coming out of a hole using Hitachi EX400s (two) and a Cat 235D to pass dirt up. Had to finish that one with a crane as even this type of attachment was not long enough.

It is rarely used as a digging machine on this particular jobsite, I have seen the bucket on it once in two weeks. It is always used just to remove and add concrete forms. Here is a cool webcam to the site.

Thought I would update this topic, I visited the site Sunday night and got a decent photo of the 850 right before it got taken out that morning. Some of you may know that these foundation jobs or any job is boarded up where you can't even look in anymore. Here is pic showing how hard it is to take these photos. I couldn't even fit a Iphone camera through the main gate, had to put my camera under the gate, and it was nighttime so it was even harder to get a good photo...The 800 triple is now loading trucks since 6 this morning. Crazy seeing how much room is needed between the hitachi and the trucks.

Here is the webcam, go to the "Park Avenue" cam, that's where you can see it loading out.
