SO I got the once in a lifetime opportunity to get into a Coal Mine and was able to get some buddies to join me. One of the big stripping operations is calling it quits so there are some auction shots included as well. Here are some of the shots. Thanks to all that made it and it was an awesome weekend Enjoy! A really big thanks to our tour guide that took a day off to shuffle us around and answer our endless questions! The Four AMIGOS, OLE' WYDOT Job, two stripped pans, two working pans. Parked up 4100 at Black Thunder 793 Running under the road Auction Iron North Antelope Rochelle Mine Downed trucks, all three majors are in use, Cat, Komatsu, Liebherr Smallest Drag onsite, 70+ yard bucket A "scrapped" EX3500 given a new life after another mine gave up on it. Overall View of the ELK pit.

Great pictures. I roughnecked all over Wyoming but never made it to Gillette. I agree with Dan. That last picture really shows the process they go through. Thanks for the pictures.

Great set of picture, the blast shot it my favorite. You are a lucky man.
The neon green tape, is it similar to DOT tape and did the mine put it on wherever they felt nessesary or is it regulated where they must place it?

Its Larry's mining they went out of business. The yellow green tape is used by the DOT our new safety reg's say everything that is Mobil has too have so much of it. even our coveralls and hard hats, and vest all have it. the crew vans and light duty trucks all have it. I enjoyed giving graham and company the tour, i hope they come back in 6 months or so too see how much it changes, and things move. the coal shot i have video i will get a link too post on you tube.

Thanks for the info on the tape. Makes sence for the use, but do you know why green over the red/white? Look forward to the video. How big of a shot was it?

its just stuck on the equipment, what ever the company color of the equipment is, then they stick on the tape. the shot was around 75 holes, around 110,000 tons of coal. it will last that shovel and the 400 tons trucks around 4 shifts, then they will be needing more shot. They are pressing the dragline pretty hard.

Those bellys were a giant conglomeration of everyones iron. There were some that still had ames stickers on them, lots of old eucs and atheys. I didnt see any with kiewit decals. Brad has a much bigger lens than I do nice closeups of the iron from across the face. G

Great pics, thanks for sharing!
The "active" mining photos, are they just from the last bits being mined or is there another company in an adjacent area still mining? I may have misunderstood the original post, but I thought it was ALL being auctioned and closed...

Jim, the auction, as I understand it, was for one contractor's equipment. The mining company is not shutting down, only one of their contractor's calling it quits.
