A friend of mine told me about a 385 in town, took a visit to it. I've never seen a lift being done like this, but it worked out pretty well I guess.

That is really cool with the 385. I would guess that this totally changes the load charts around when you pick something up like that. The center of gravity is much smaller.

I wonder what the advantage of rigging there is. It looks cool but why not just rig off the bucket? Looks cool up there though.

The advantage is being able to pick it up. While that box culvert looks small there is a lot of weight there. Even if they had a quick coupler on this machine, and dropped the bucket, there is no way they could make that lift with that boom/stick combo. This rigging point changes there the load is in the machines chart, and it allows you to make this pick

By lifting from there the load radius is reduced by about 10 feet or so, allowing a much higher capacity. With the rigging at th coupler and the bucket off, not only would the load be farther away, but the boom angle would be higherand capacity drops quickly as the boom angle gets higher. It has to do with the angle of the cylinders in relation to the boom.

There are pictures floating around of a large Hitachi rigged to lift from the bottom of the boom about midway from the end back to the lift cylinders. That allows it to lift giant boulders in a custom grapple.
