I'm sure DOT would be more interested in the lowboy spotted in the 55 MPH traffic lane, without so much as a cone in front of it.
Nice pictures! Keep them coming.

good to see another company busy, one of our competitors has gone so close to bankruptcy there leasing our d65,980,and our old 365bl! the only were staying afloat is the power plant job and the income from the equipment that is leased, thankfully we got a $5,500,000.00 highway widening job similar to the one you guys did this summer, only we hate pans and paddle wheels...Wink

We found a soft spot with the 336 today

The more he tried to get out the worse it got

Lets get some mats in here, that should help solve the problem.

It was working, we are going to need to get some more help, and more mats

And the Calvary has arrived in the form of a PC300. We are going to use the collective strength of the PC300 and the 336D to release the mud's suction. The 953 is chained up ready to pull once the suction is broken.

We need to get the machine out pronto. Vapor should not be coming out of the exhaust.

Just in time. Time to shut it down before any more damage is done to the engine.

Looks good, all the way around!
About 18 years ago on a job I was on, we had a brand new 350 Cat hoe go down like your model did. By the time we got it out with an 814 wheel dozer, a 950 loader, a D4H and a D8N, the 350 had buried its rear end in the mud, pluging the blow-by tube up with mud, thus forcing about 3 gallons of engine oil out the turbo seals and the exhaust pipe. Good times!

Are you an enviromentist, or do you work for a living?

The damage was fairly extensive to the 336D. It got a ride back to the shop. Meanwhile the PC300-8 is subbing. The crew is not happy about the substitute teacher.Teeth

All kinds of small things going on here. Putting a little dirt here, a little there. The extension to the sanitary is almost complete.

I really like this old Mack R-series.

Ahh the pan has arrived, hopefully there are not problems with the old gal. If there are they should be easy to identify at least.

We have been keeping the 627 busy moving dirt. Good thing we hired a ghost operator, we don't have a ROPS on the machine.

Working around grade stakes. The old 627 was not exactly set up for machine control. Not talking

Checking grade, yep sure enough another four feet to go. At least he is checking, not sipping lemonade in the shade.

Great pics Ethan as always!!!

One quick question though, the windshield on that pan looks like it is bent too far back toward the operator, did it come that way or what happened?? I think it is supposed to be more straight than that.

Can't wait to see that 666 on the site too!!!!

Oh and for some who don't know, PAN = earth mover/ scraper, this term has been used for as long as I can remember on construction sites especially in NY. When I was a kid and went to work with my brother back in the late 60's early 70's they were referred to as "pans". Just thought I'd let you all know if you have never heard them called a "pan" before.

Dain

I'm a kid at heart, so I will play with any model construction vehicle from 1:87 scale to 1:1 scale!!!!

Age is a state of time NOT a state of mind!!

The windshield came like that. It was a low cost eBay purchase. I have not tried to bend the windshield back yet. I will probably end up turning this machine into a "B" model anyway.

Basketball Man,

Based on personal experience and that of other collectors, I would advise not to attempt the straightening of the bent windshield frame on the Caterpillar 627 scraper, it WILL break.

dain555,

If you are not aware, modern day "scrapers" are sometimes referred to as "pan" because the modern day machine can trace their development all the way back to the very first horse drawn "land scrapers":

Kind of looks like a large "pan".

Randy, thanks for the history lesson, I did not know that, that is so cool. I was always under the impression it was a construction term handed down over a few years from one company to another by the operators. See I just learned something today that I did not know, how cool is that!!!

Just goes to show ya that the minds back then are far superior to what is out there today, after all if it had not been for these innovative people back then we wouldn't have the equipment we do today!!

Oh and if it is done properly it can be straightened but it has to be done a little at a time and with light pressure and it will straighten right up but as I said a little at a time and light pressure!!!
