I've been working on this project for the past few days, I'm customizing and detailing this old remote control crane into a model. It's not going to be a model of a specific machine, but rather a general representation of a horse-head style level luffing crane.

So far progress has been going at a good pace.

Added some supports for the operators cab.

I plated over the I-beam legs to make a box style legs like the prototype.

The counterweight has been bent inward and had some detailing that wouldn't be seen on the prototype so I squared it up with strip styrene and then plated it over, I'm going to build a removable cover for the counterweight so I can add ballast at a later date.

The operators cab is coming along, the design of the cab is pattered off a IHI crane.

As for the paint I decided to paint the cranes in a paint scheme patterned after the cranes at the Fincantieri shipyards in (seen above). I was planning to make a taller base like the the Fincantieri cranes but the place where it will sit will be on top of the display cases, and in the model room the ceiling is not particularly tall so it wouldn't fit.

There's still much more to come.

Nice idea! Please keep the pictures coming. Reminds me of the cranes around Puerto Madera in Buenos Aires. Those Fincantieri ones look massive!

I waited a little bit to reply, since I thought more photos were coming, but this is gonna be something interesting to see! Those cranes look gigantic and I can't wait to see the final result.

Keep us posted!
