Gents, i have acquired a couple of Mack Hoods from ebay.. Any idea from which kits they have come from I've built a fair few asam kits admittedly euro subjects, but these dont look or feel like they are from those, and they are cast in pewter not the whitemetal used by asam so i ask the assembled oracle, are these from some out of production source? The one on the left is a Mack RD800 hood, and the one on the right is a Mack Superliner hood, both from a Smith Kit. Ken

I was going to say, the right is definitely a superliner! Did these come with a kit originally or could the be mated to an older Conrad Mack? Daily Diesel Dose.com| All Ready Mix.com | Plowsite DOT Thread | If your only contribution is complaining, please don't contribute!

Dan85, Except for supplying replacements for damaged components, Allan Smith did provide these as part of vehicle kits. Mack models from Conrad are produced to 1:50 scale, Mack models from Allan Smith are produced to 1:48 scale, making the Allan Smith hoods larger than the Cab assemblies from Conrad. In my opinion would be tough to make that look right. Randy M. Smolenack RMSmodels@aol.comrandy.m.smolenack.civ@mail.mil

Could these actually be repros of someone who's taken a smith piece or actually built a scratch master, then used a mold making and white metal kit?.......has been what I've though when I've seen them on the bay.

Speaking for myself, I still have kits I ordered from Hiram. I have ordered hoods, cabs, bodies, and parts from Alan Smith before he sold his American truck line to Keystone. I doubt these were remolded, as you need a large mold to hold them, not something the average spin caster would have. I do not think these were scratch built, as they look exactly like Alan's. Ken

The right hood is an early Superliner as it has the round headlights. There was a period that the RD600 was available with sheet metal as well though I do not have the knowledge of the builder of these.
