Hello guys - thought I would ask this question of you experts!

Can you find pics of a Cat "Sugar Baby"? Not sure of the spelling here but it is a Cat D6 with Rubber Tires and used in Florida swamps and wet areas where a tracked machine would be too heavy.

Anybody know anything about these? Googling is not showing me much...

What do you know?

Admin,

Since this is a "Model" forum after all, Francis Pierre when associated with A.T.M. produced a kit.

I'm also pretty sure someone had one on display, or was carrying it around at one of the DHS Open Houses.

From what my understanding is that Caterpillar made a small number of D-6's on rubber, specifically for Ringling Bros. Circus, and possibly also for Royal American Shows. It seems crawlers chewed up pavement too much when these carnivals and circuses were setting up in parks and parking lots, so Cat specially made some rubber tire models; most of them were bare I believe, and were used for unloading circus/carnival wagons, etc from rail cars. They weren't really too successful, so i believe Cat did a buy back of them. In an attempt to resell them, they retrofitted them with dozers and sent them out to construction ,loggers, ect. and they weren't much more successful there either. I believe thats when cat was pushing them as sugar cane tractors.

I remember when I was a young kid growing up in Florida going past Kelly Tractor in Clewiston Fla. Seeing several parked out in front of their dealership. Clewiston at the time was a small town. Like William said they were used in the sugar cane farms around Belle Glade, Palmdale and Clewiston. Glenn

I always thought they where made to compete with the LeTourneau Tournatractor, and the Tournadozer?
