Interesting article on how Caterpillar will designate design changes in their product line, wonder how this will be accommodated in the model world?

There will definitely be a lot of bitching and complaining on this forum.

I think it is going to make keeping track of numbers and series a real pain in the ass, real quick. From 336F, to 336 (Model 07, 08, 09 etc). I am still trying to figure out the reasoning behind it, as what is written in the article doesn't make much sense. With both Backhoes and excavators for instance, they are at the "F" series. That means they still have 20 more letters in the alphabet to use, and quiet honestly, I cant think of one series butting into another series.

It seems weird that only on the dozers will be letter since the majority of those are at T vs. excavators were only at F. Not talking I agree with SDBOB also, that it's for the new people that are getting into the mix. I'm gonna have to get used to that

Makes sense to me. From my perspective, I've never seen an F-150E, it's just an F-150, and you have to look at the manufacturing plate to find model year, etc. I realize that heavy doesn't follow model years, but the concept is the same.

Personally, I think the change in nomenclature is so that Caterpillar can make running changes on the production line as/when necessary without having the formality of a new model introduction.
