Model cars are supposed to be in a 1/43 scale.
During many years, Corgi Toys and Dinky Toys - top model producers in the 1950s/1960s - used to built models in a 1/48 scale (a scale favored in UK, where it is also known as 1/4' scale) or in a very neighboring scale.

A few examples, generally - and wrongly - associated with the 1/43 scale:

Buick Riviera Generation 1 4x2/2(*) (modified Corgi Toys model),

Note (*): according to my calculations, the 5.28 metres long car could be reproduced in a 1/51 scale (model measurement indicating 1/5077 precisely).

To be continued... in a few days.

Two other vintage models, generally associated with 1/43 scale:

- left: Studebaker Golden Hawk 4x2/2 coupe (modified Corgi Toys model),
- right: Plymouth Sports Suburban Station Wagon 4x2/2 (modified Corgi Toys model).

To be continued.

In "The Great Book of Corgi" page 53, M. R. van Cleemput indicated that the Studebaker vehicle was reproduced in 1/49 scale(*):

Note (*): my own ma propre analyse indique que la voiture de 10.4 mètres de long serait au 50ème (valeur trouvée: 1/4981).

A suivre.

Sorry: previous post sent by mistake during the translation process.

In "The Great Book of Corgi" page 53, M. R. van Cleemput indicated that the Studebaker vehicle was reproduced in 1/49 scale(*):

Note (*): my own analysis indicates that the 10.4 metres long car could be in a 1/50 scale (exact value found: 1/4981).

To be continued.

Page 54 of the same book, the Plymouth station wagon is indicated as being produced in a 1/49 scale(*) also:

Note (*): my analysis shows that the Corgi car could be modeled in a 1/51 scale instead (1/5132).

To be continued... in a few days.

What brand are your figures? Perhaps they're slightly on the large side. What is their height in mm? Are they the same as the Preiser figures?

Jamiescotland,

The guys I use around are Preiser 1/50 figures and are generally 3.5 to 3.6cm in height (which equals to 1.75/1.80m in a 1/50 scale).
They seem too small to be 1/43 (which would then give a man height of 151/155cm).

I hope it helps.

Aha, ok thanks. I thought they looked slightly too big for those cars, but maybe not.

Last post of the series dedicated to "1/43" model cars, a Dinky Toys example:

Pontiac Bonneville 58 4x2/2 station wagon modified as a Criterion ambulance by Superior (modified Dinky Toys model, to be repainted),

Announced in a 1/48 scale by Dinky Toys UK (see following post), the model was effectively produced in that scale (1/4821 as per my own measurements).

It should be noted that, by mid-February 1961, approx. 44% of the 196 models produced by Dinky Toys UK at that time (airplanes excluded) was modeled in a 1/48 scale (1/4" on that page of a Meccano Ltd "scales" document):

The ambulance can be found at the fifth place from the bottom of the right row.

Sometimes (this part of the post is for "Jamiescotland") the model is not exactly as expected in terms of scale. An example with that Citroën 2CV6 produced by Siku, a German toy manufacturer famous for their low cost 1/55 models:

As per my own measurements, the Citroën 2CV6 Siku model could be reproduced in a 1/52 scale lengthwise, but 1/48 in width and 1/55 in height.
Probably because of its reduced height, the model seems far too small when displayed alongside 1/50 Preiser figures.

Regards.

I saw a Hotwheels Fiat 500 in a shop the other day. It could almost be 1:50 scale, but I'm not sure. If I see another for sale, I'm getting it! It can't be far off - it's a tiny car!

Jamiescotland,

From what I know, Hot Wheels are part of Mattei and are specialized in a sort of generic 1/64 scale: https://www.pistonudos.com/en/what-scale-are-hot-wheels-cars
As I don't know about their FIAT 500, I wouldn't comment unless I'm able to measure it but I would remain suspicious as there is a large difference in scale between 1/50 and 1/64 (or whatever it is).

I hope it helps.

Siku indicate that the Maybach unit (2016 Mercedes-Benz electric concept-car) is reproduced in a 1/50 scale:
