thats an incredible amount of damage! sad to see something like that happen to such large machines (more specifically Lampson ) i cant imagine the thought running through peoples heads as the cable was just free spooling!!

What is it exactly with Lampson cranes? Except this and Big blue, there have been lots of accidents with Lampson cranes (as I've heard, and seen a few) in the last years.

I saw the post in the Other section of the forum here (the DHS Lounge) with the video link, my other half and I were astonished at it!!!!
These pics are incredible and in the video you can hear the winch whinning as it spools out too, then the obvious words of the filmer, **edited*** Please see forum rules about language, even using astricks
Thanks Tim for the additional pictures and explanation!!!

Lampson is usually not at fault in most of those accidents Alexander, typically is operator error.... they rent out their Transi-Lifts bare most of the time (not one of their operators running them) and the guy they gut is inexperienced on that machine

Rossco - it doesnt appear that the drag is laced all the way, hence the reason the Transi-Lift is holding the boom up

Those photos are unreal. The carnage of that crash is just insane. The video really tells the story well. You can see the white in the fore ground swing right as the dragline boom started to fall. Its a good that the Lampson crane had the 'double track' base and the operator was in the rear section. He would have been crsh for sure. Another amazing part of the video is watching the top end of the dragline 'ride' Lampsons boom all the way to the ground. Probably offered some 'resistance' so the fall wasn't as fast as it could have been. See........video shows so much more than just a picture. Hint, Hint...

The operators (it takes 3)didnt make the lift early in the day because of the winds .. the guys were on the way out the gate in the late afternon, winds were subsiding ...by the time the lift was ready to be made ..the winds were in parameter to hoist ..so thet did .. at the worst possable point in the lift the winds gust back up ..gust being the key element.. side on, the LTL was vastly overloaded by the wind ,the additional load added to the actual lift by the wind was ..rather large.. ,wind load on the lift, side load, of the additional side pull of a heavier load were never calculated in the engineering ..it was done after by forensic investigators.. everything said and done .. the blame does lay at the operators feet....but ..the lift was within parameter when the load left the ground ..

I'm far form a crane operator and or specialist and not trying to trick anyone but if the load was calculated properly the lift made within parameters then the only responsible is the gust of wind ! so why the blame on the operator ?

The operator bares ultimate responsibility .....those men had to defend themselves ... did share some of the blame..not to the greater extent of the firms involved with orchestrating the job ...

gotta take the good with the bad man.... when a job goes as planned the operators look good, when things go wrong gotta take the blame as well.... ultimately you are in control of that machine, you cant prevent mother nature

DeWoc19 wrote:ultimately you are in control of that machine, you cant prevent mother nature Ah but DeWoc, Mother Nature IS the ultimate operator along with the idiot Murphy who made those laws!!! All in all the best laid plans are to be reckoned with and something will mess it up!!! If you also noticed the white lattice boom in the background almost came down too, I saw the luffer strain as the cables broke!!!!

So was all the smoke at the rear of this 4600 coming from a super heating drum?....would be my assumption.
Saw this before but it was equally as frightful this second time around.
