That steel does ..its a Hybrid mix of alloy ..

had an old piece at the shop ..the more a guy tried to weld it the more it cracked ..the proper process is rather involved..

watch the boom in this clip ..Sure it was boom bound ..but..it didnt bend and tear out ..it snapped ..

in this clip ..text book new crane versus old crane..where the newer one snapped(not sure how new ..but it appears to be Ovaloid boom,with sectional scope ..theres no hydraulic cylinder in it ..the norm in newer hyraulic cranes of this size ) the old one's tip,it appears to be trapazoidal boom (Grove)

The middle one looks like an early Krupp or Gottwald...it folds then tears out ..

In the case of a side load on newer cranes ..it well fold like a tin foil tube and lay over ..
