The method used here is common, in this case a major ovehaul was being done, and required crane power on site... Some draglines are equipped with sheaves and winches to raise and lower the boom, some are rigged to use the hoist drums to raise or lower the boom, some have used both the hoist and drag drums to raise the boom...But, that takes a lot of rigging of hoisting wires, added sheaves, etc. The crane in this case was not overloaded.... the theory or hear-say is that the engine stalled or died and the torgue convertor spun backwards overpowering the the system thru the drive line. The dragline boom was NOT damaged badly, or not nearly as bad as it could have been... it was up and running in a short time after this accident. These things happen, and they happen to the best of them. I don't know of a single large crane or lifting outfit that has not had incidents. In regards to Lampson, well they have thousands of lifts that have been flawless, they have done big lifting for decades, and in regards to volume of jobs and worldwide operations, they are as good as any of them. Even Mammoet has had crane accidents... and some have been pretty bad too. If you realy look at the Transi-Lift accidents, you will find that human error and improper use or planning was the cause in nearly all of them. This one might have been operator error, or maybe equipment failure... the 4600 is not a forgiving machine for torque convertor problems... if anything is wrong, or fails, down it goes. Just he nature of the machine from what I have heard. And yes the machine would be traveling with the load, thats the whole idea of using crawler cranes... they can travel with the load.

That wasnt the one they dropped,that was the previous one that lampson done.

Great photos. Had to have been a nice feeling to finally separate the crane from the drag. Man what a dizzying looking walk down along the boom of that big Marion. Chris

na they were hooking it up to be lowered,the same way it was done in the one that they dropped.Just to note,they were different drivers.

The renter finds operators ..Lampson offer's technical assistance and training ..the renter buys an insurance policy..Lampson gets a big check in the mail ..and carries on ..By any stretch of the imagination its smart business ..As long as it wasnt the unit that failed ..and more often than not its human error that brings the machines down ..
