Hopefully something that makes sense. I can't figure out how you think the undercarriage is the same....or any of the other issues people have raised that are clearly different. Brian

I'm sorry you refuse to listen to reason, maybe some day you'll be able to open your eyes when the info is officially released on the new model. Brian

Definetly not a 336. The boom appears more like a 45D's boom, and engine cover's wider. And, it sure looks bigger than a 35 tonner of the triaxle.

Nice spy shots, have to agree, looks bigger than the 336E to me. Would be good to see a 50ton machine in the line up again. I like the designation of the 349, leaves the 350 alone just like the 374D left the 375 alone. Rowan. 1:25th scale CAT 375L excavator

There are many pending changes in the Cat excavator line in the coming months. First you have Cat's re-numbering in process to better classify their machines as excavators are generally measured by their weights.
Second, you have the addition of emissions technology resulting in the higher sheet metal structures that you are beginning to see. The space containes an "emissions module" including a particulate filter similar to what we saw on trucks beginning in 2007 in the US. This certainly will result in a new series designation and serial number runs.
Likewise, Cat has built machines in various configurations, i.e. mass excavators, deep trenchers, etc. that have had boom, stick, bucket, counterweigth and under carriage differences.
Likewise Cat, when introducing new machines, has built a few field follow machines, or prototypes that given to customers to use after factor testing but before production testing. Hence we are likely seeing a mixture of variants, new model numbers and some truely new machines making it difficult to find out what you are looking at.
I am going to suggest that you are either looking at a 336E with the severe duty undercarriage, generally that of one series larger machine, or truely a field follow 349E prototype.
For those that have not worked around these machines, the Cat 350 was never well accepted. It was too heavy to move for those that had owned 235, 235B and 235C machines. There are only about 350 235Ds that were built and they are a world onto themselves and the 350 might have been a worthy successor if it were not for frame issues.
For Cats sake, I hope they get it right this time on the larger machines.

We could just wait a few months and more might come out of the woodwork.

I'm still convinced it is not a 336E due to the extensive differences with the rest of the machine. I guess we'll have to wait and see, but I feel it's a prototype for a larger machine which may just be the 349E L. Brian

I feel certain that some posters here might know more than they really are allowed to say for a period of time. But man to my less than (machinery) educated eyes; I would say it had a look of size similar to a 336 E. Chris

While some of you are hung up on the shape of the boom, or the number of rollers, did you bother to look at the size of the track frame, or the size of the heavy duty bucket on the "349" those 2 items alone make this a vastly larger machine than the 336, though they share some visual design qualities. The bucket size dictates that this is a 45 to 50 ton class machine. I know there are contractors out there who put that big of a bucket on a 36 to 40 ton machine, but not from the dealer, which the unmarked machine clearly is. The picture of the one with the 2 service trucks next to it is a 336, look at the undercarriage. then look at the one on the lowboy again. Big difference.

Just another comparative picture. The first shot is a picture of a 336E posted by 'sim59' here -> http://photostp.free.fr/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5657&start=60The second is of the supposed 349E by 'Bolt Thrower' on HEF here -> http://www.heavyequipmentforums.com/Forum/showthread.php?t=19084There is a big difference to me but I'll let you guys be the judge...
