What’s this? Bobm making a post?? A post on a project for himself??? How dare he take away from shop time to do something so selfish and self serving!!! And check it out, its not even a crane conversion to Mammoet-the world must be coming to an end!!! Next thing you know dogs and cats will be sleeping together and the day will be night and night will be day!!!

After working in the shop all fall, winter and spring to make money to cover the cost of PTC’s, DHS Open House models and swords it was time for some me time!!! A few months ago forum friend bluebarn came by with two huge boxes of plastrut parts and pieces. And I mean a huge boxes!! After spending several hours going through all the “stuff” I made some selections. I decided that I would consult with my inner Imagineering Department and came up with the following 37 inch tall two tier refinery/chemical tower thingy. (And yes I do have to say that after recent postings by forum friend Hummer13, I just had to try my hand at this)

So here we go for a ride through my Imagineering Department!! Stay with the group and do not open any closed doors-at least that’s what I do!

You start with a group of raw materials, parts and pieces

After a little thinking I decided that the tower would be two level and needed a deck, a few minutes with the band saw

With vertical things you need vertical markings so they do not come out at a crazy angle!!

Adding parts and pieces going on!

The safety railing on the deck

And here we are gluing on the transition collar, using 16000 counter weights to help!

Gluing the upper vessel to the lower

I use an auto body filler to fill in gaps, make solid connections. It goes on and dries pretty quick, sand it smooth for a smooth transition finish

And under primer

And painted silver metallic

And completely assembled

And now for some of the details that bring large pieces together:

The shut off valve with chain operator

Swing away access hatches with warning beacons

Hand rails with safety lighting

Red aircraft warning beacons on top and sides of the top

A detailed view of the first deck, stairs and hatches. All pipe fittings covered with plywood.

And finally hung under the PTC the way it was meant to be!!

That's amazing work Bob!!

BTW, could you tell me where you got those covered ladders and railings? Did you make them yourself, or are they like that available in modelshops?

Superb craftsmanship - as usual!
What are you using for a base on the tower? Is that item from Plastruct? I've pretty much purchased at least one of everything they offer- did I miss that? I need some sort of base transition piece for my tower...

The base looks like a 6 inch cone cut down. You have to love that plastruct stuff.

Thanks for the comments!! It was fun building it, especially as it was make it up as you go. Hummer is right on a couple of things. The ladders and cages are from plastruct. And the base is in fact a piece of the transition cone. It comes in 6" to 1" and I cut it down to the 5" of the tube, which left the litle one inch collar left over. I too was looking for a base and saw it on the floor, and had one of thus eurka a-ha moments, dropped it over and it fit like a glove. The lifting trusions are a cap piece from them as well, however I took a page and a bit of passed on knowledge from another forum friend, jeepin paul, and put a solid 1/2" tube through the tube and then attached the trusions, that way the entire weight of the piece rests on the tube and not a glued piece.

You see this forum works so darn well, the members here are a wealth of knowledge and are all willing to share!! It is worth the occasional stuff that happens!

Oh and Steve, just cause you got me the material, have not mentioned what I owe you -you can not have this-you do not own a PTC!!!!

looks awesome completely finished, and i really like the metallic silver color!

good detail with all the lights and railing and the shut off valve with chain, GREAT TOUCH! good work my friend, good work! looks great under the PTC as well, i knew it was tall from seeing it in person but hanging under the crane like that you really get a good size for it.

Bob, nice undertaking! That's quite a successful endeavor!
In other words; great work on an excellent looking piece of scratch building.

^^^Do it! There is a lot of satisfaction in constructing something like that and you have the opportunity for some creativity. Try an image search on the Net with terms like "oil refinery" and/or "petrochemical complex." You'll get a lot of interesting ideas and Plastruct can supply virtually all the fittings, so pretty much any configuration is possible.

How did you know Bob....you must remember, it is currently show season....I cut back on diecast purchases during the summer.....now come winter, watch out.... Check you email...I sent you a list of parts and your cost. I am sure we are up for a trade in services anyways.... Cool

The PTC is on my short list....Just have to pick up 2 stationary gas engines in Canandaigua, NY next weekend during their steam show....http://www.pageantofsteam.org/ and if I can get my schedule to work out, I might drive the extra 300 miles and catch the show in Brownsville, PA on Saturday...

My biggest problem is space....I have all but one of my lattice cranes in their boxes due to my limited display space.
