Great shots Bob..What was the gross capcity of that hook block and what did it weigh ???

The block weights over 100,000lbs it'll take 22 parts from 2inch thick wirerope. Capacity is around 2,500tons.

I also learned something while eavesdropping on the Manitowoc Engineers, the owner of Loma Crane and the Crane Rental guys-that typically a 22 part line set up, meaning 11 sheaves on the mast head and 11 on the block for a total of 22 reeves, is about the point of maximum efficiency for a block set up-meaning most capacity. They were saying that after 22 parts you actually start to loose capacity. So that is why instead of one winch, they will divide it up in multiplies of 22. So this block needs two drums for its 22 part set up. Looking at my block on the CC8800, yup, 22 parts per winch, LR1750 yup 22 parts, PTC had a 16 part.

So I learned something new. Also as an fyi the cable they are using is a 56 mm diameter cable, that is about 2.25" in diameter!

This is true Bob ..due to friction and inertia

Also a winch can pull more on the first layer of rope that it can on the top layer ..most cranes will have a chart in the cab that identifies maximum line pull base on what layer of cable the drum is on ..

I knew there was a practical limit, now we have the number. Cool The basic block and tackle idea is a remarkable construction workhorse in societies throughout history... Think

ok, just by looking at the pictures of the block I can see that theres 22 shives on the block itself so i think that what your trying to get at bob is that there will be 22 parts of line per winch. the crane would need 2 winches reeved up at 22 parts of line per winch, for a total of 44 parts, to get the total capacity of 2500t.
