Guys, sorry to be the barer of bad news but the big girl has suffered a pretty bad mishap, the pedestal and superstructure part of the machine was being loaded onto one of there heavy haulage wagons..... Pictures not mine but taken from Hansbube http://www.flickr.com/photos/51622272@N03/4983531216/in/pool-1536420@N20 http://www.flickr.com/photos/51622272@N03/4983530218/in/pool-1536420@N20 During the loading process something went very wrong and the whole machine tipped onto its side. On 1st glimpse the damage does not look too bad. Because it is only a 1 section of a much larger machine, and the fact a replacement crane will cost millions ALE might get it repaired. Yet another setback to the big Gottwald, this was the machine that burnt out in Tunisia a few years ago! Gaz

Happened Friday, was due to be rigged at the airfield this week for a proof load test before heading to invergordon. Should imagine it will find it's way to John Taylors for different reasons now. Hopefully it can be repaired.

Yup, the crane was refurbished after the fire in Tunisia, but the truck was a right off so the crane became a pedestal crane, been knocking around like that for about a year. It has just finished de-rigging at Shell Haven in Essex when while loading the superstructure on to the 4x2 low loader it tipped off the side. A friend of mine was there and watched it happen, he sent me a load of pictures but I cannot share them sorry. As it went over it landed on the LR matts (huge 3m x 6m heavy duty steel crane matts) that it was rigged on, because of this it never landed on the ground, that might have give a little, the steel matts did not! The bang was loud, 57t dropping onto solid steel has caused some structural damage....and that is serious in a crane!
Hopefully ALE will repair it cos as I said earlier a replacement 1200t crane will cost millions!

thanks for the info, i imagine that bang was VERY loud lol, you cant imagine a sight like that superstructure falling over, however, makes you wonder, how does a superstructure fall over when being loaded onto a trailer??

Sometimes, the forum doesn't distinguish between the end of a link and the start of new text. If it doesn't hyperlink to the right address (cuts off part of the address), make sure you use the link button when you post a reply instead of just typing the address http://www.flickr.com/photos/51622272@N03/4983531216/in/pool-1536420@N20http://www.flickr.com/photos/51622272@N03/4983530218/in/pool-1536420@N20Apart from that, shame to hear the old girl has suffered another mishap. Great pictures too Jack. Rowan. 1:25th scale CAT 375L excavator
