Great piece, Ian. I appreciate the interview - gives some great insight into the design/build process between the manufactuers and OEMs. I've been very satisfied with my Tonkin purchases so far and look forward to their upcoming products.

I agree 100% about the car salesman remark, but I think he reminds me more of a used car salesman. Every time he said high quality I cringed.

It was very interesting to observe how the different interviewees came across.
Perhaps it wasn't the right time or place but it would have been nice to ask WSI and Tonkin about the poor standard and QC of their models.
I see on Hansebube that some WSI models(the LTM1500s of all models) are being refered to as "bananas" because they literally sit like a banana shape.

Anyhow, looking forward to what's coming in the future from Norscot and Tonkin.
I wonder what "group" Tonkin is going to do next, in the interview he said that they want to do groups of equipment (ie. the wheel loader series) but wouldn't lead on to what was coming in the future. Looks like it could go in a few different ways, is it a forestry line with the road builder, log loader, and now the skidder announced? Could it be excavators with tracks already being done and the 340dl, a scraper line? Hmmm...

SDBOB - There are no details on Manitowoc models from Tonkin. They only mention at the end of the interview that Tonkin just got a Manitowoc license. It's also written at the top of the interview window by Ian.
I was surprised there wasn't much discussed in the interviews about crane models, but you could see them in the videos.

Scott Stern has always been a smarmy person, but considering how much money he has made over the years one might think he would invest in a "high quality" toupée.
It's also quite interesting to see Mr. Bymo lounging in the Tonkin booth with Joep.

Last year the Norscot guy was explaining the high detail and quality on the Cat PM200 cold planer when I was on the stand. I just had to walk away because I was going to say some nasty things I would regret later I can imagine this years toyfair being a disappointment for the people that where expecting lots of new models but if you where there and actually talked to the people, there is lots more comming. A great many of the people who run these companies are not there to keep us happy(that should be a pre requisite of their job), they are there purely and simply to increase the profit margin. Hence the move to China for most of them...which is good business sense, specifically when you can get the Chinese to do the really good quality control, but do keep in mind they don't care about the things we love, for the most. They care about the bottom line.
