There were photos posted here a long time ago; but since the search function here doesn't "function", it would take many hours to go through the threads. Chuck? Please use this before clicking "post"??? You may be surprised with what you see!

From my understandings Fresh Kills had 7 of them, gives you a good idea of the size of this place. 3 of them went to Great Lakes Dredge, there sitting right off Richmond Terrace in Staten Island outside there offices. There currently creating a park out of the site. Once the park is complete these 120C's will be on display for the public. I doubt people will be able to go onto them due the the safety issue. Fresh Kills also has 3 Cat 992G's, one of them still runs here on Staten Island working at the concrete recyling yard, a large fleet of Payhauler 350C's along with, im going to go with about 40 Cat D400D's. They also got some Cat 245's and what I beleive is a Manitowoc 3900 with a 4600 stlye cab, some Cat D9R waste editions, and lots of other smaller stuff.

How big was Fresh Kills? 3,000 acres. They had one of the largest equipment fleets in one place in the country. As far as Payhaulers, They had 52 of them, most modified to haul 90 cu yds of trash. With the hi volume bodies, they were 30 feet tall. They had at least seven of the RH 120's and many other big machines. I recall that at one time they had 60 or so D8H's hauling triple Athey side dump garbage trailers "tracked" from the fleet of garbage barges that unloaded 24-7 year round..... They had as many as 30 D9's back in the 70's for pushing, etc. Cranes with clams, draglines ,scrapers, and many other excavators and machines, etc, etc. The landfill was by far the largest in the world.

I did once here it was the largest in the world... I got a tour of the place and I gotta say, it is massive. That fleet is by far the most impressive Edit: also heard it can be seen from space

There are two Wikipedia entries for it. The second article is better: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fresh_kills http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fresh_Kills_LandfillAnd a little bit about the conversion to a park. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freshkills_ParkI think they only built it up, not out so it is 2200 acres. Two sentences from the better article: It could be regarded as being the largest man-made structure on Earth,[3] with the site's volume eventually exceeding the Great Wall of China.[3] In fact, in 2001 its peak was 25 meters taller than the Statue of Liberty

Check this video out. It was made by artist Gordon Matta-Clark around 1972. It shows some of the D8's pulling the Athey wagons and some other equipment. -Josh

Dump on the edges, the middle will take care of itself. Never look down on ANYONE! Unless it is to lift them up.
