Hi besides all the super loads going in the city the 40000 lb standard loads are important too. The Black and Silver Freightliner is 72 year old Mr Bob Davis still hauling , he was with AJ ross on the original twin towers . Pulled 75 ton loads with that rubber block freightshaker !!! The white freightliner is Art from Robbins , fellow driver with Greg P and his father at Supor . John

--May 17, 2011 - It's well after 3 AM and still dark out. It’ll be a few more hours until the sun breaks up the indigo night sky over Lower Manhattan, ushering in the day, announcing that Friday has finally arrived and the weekend is upon us.

It's been another long night for the guys working on The Hub. Foreman Mike Sullivan and the ironworkers started their shift at 7 and haven't broken for "lunch" yet. Steel superintendent Brandin Stitt punched in Thursday at 6. He’s going on twenty-one hours; the fatigue showing on his face, the wear betrayed by the dark rings beneath his eyes. "I'll just be glad when this week is over," he says.

Tonight marked a major milestone for the project as the first of four Super Columns was installed. Welders had been working 'round the clock on the steel: two shifts, twenty-three hour days, seven days a week. It had taken four months of on-site fabrication to create the 227- ton column that will unify the Transportation Hub's PATH Hall and Transit Hall, allowing commuters to traverse between Ground Zero’s east and west side. At more than half a million pounds, this was the heaviest piece of steel to be lifted and placed on the entire 16 acre site; arguably – certainly literally – the Hub's biggest moment.

Last minute welding and grinding continued on the Super Column until after 11. As soon as the flames were extinguished on the acetylene torches, the raising gang went to work, moving the column horizontally, into position. At 1, the column was tripped up, then carefully, slowly, methodically, hoisted up and over the train line that bisects the site.

Veteran ironworker Troy Stremming stood on the west side, perched atop temporary steel shoring, ready to receive the piece. He had 3 feet to work with, with an 80 foot drop to bedrock and steel below – but he looked comfortable guiding the monstrous column into place, careful to keep it away from PATH Hall's steel.

By 3 AM, the raising gang had successfully lowered the column onto its massive concrete footing. The team is now welding it in place, affixing it to its steel base plate. Sullivan, who was integral in the operation – at one point even taking hold of one of the guidelines to help pull the Super Column away from the steel already in place – looked on, happy with the night's procedure.


“It was a slow pick. It took longer than most – but it’s a big piece,” Sullivan remarked. “We got it in safely, and now we’ll keep moving forward.” His eyes were alert, awake despite the hour, surveying the work being finished before us.
